5.0 out of 5 stars A real "grower", March 28, 2008
By Joshua Eyre (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"At the Ballroom" sounds good from first listen, but not too remarkable. Like all great albums though, it grows on you. And, oh boy, does this record really grow on you. Not too much filler with tons of great hooks. Each song reveals itself to have some great merit until they all become a favorite for whatever reason. The easiest band to compare them to would be Stars. There are 2 singers (male and female) and all of the songs are mixes of analogue and digital leaning towards rock. It's definitely worth a listen, but the payoff will really come with the familiarity of repeated listens.

3.0 out of 5 stars I went down to the Ballroom and baby...I saw the Moon!, June 21, 2008
What's up with the Swedish and their making of music? In the Moonbabies' "Moonbabies at the Ballroom," the Swedes have done it again, made some more music. First there was Abba, then Ace of Base, then Herman Dune and now these Stars-sound alikes.

The Moonbabies are Ola 'frickin' Frick and Carina Scarlett Johannason and they are the female ying to the male yang (can you talk like that on Amazon?) Like other Swedish pop, The Moonbabies have a certain sugary smooth sheen to their sound. The two tracks from this album I've been digging and listening to lately are "War on Sound," and "Take Me To the Ballroom."

"War on Sound," starts out promisingly enough with a Pixies-like bass but then goes and screws with the formula by doing some electronic drums in there. Electronic drums should rarely if ever be used unless it sounds good which it rarely does. I always like the male-female vocal interplay which these Swedes have in spades. I could see where this song begins to screw itself in your brain and catch on when you are in your weaker pop-oriented moments in life.

"Take Me To The Ballroom," is a shoegazer guitar strumming never quite taking off song. The vocals just sound a little too nice a little in need of spice to me. You keep waiting for the punch, waiting for the cool and I fear it never really pays off.

If your taste lean towards the pop proclivities and you enjoy sucking on Swedish gummy fish, by all means grab "The Moonbabies at The Ballroom." If you are digging on the Stars which for me never really took off, you won't want to miss la luna de la ninos. If you like a little more edge, look elsewhere my friend. ...mmw
