4.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff, April 16, 2005
This review is from: Return to N.Y. (Audio CD)
I have always been a fan of Nanook of the North. That is a great band. Mattias Olsson is mainly responsible for that, as he is for this one. AK-Momo is more an electronic duo with female vocals, so it's more like Goldfrapp and Portishead. The singer, AK von Malmborg, has that childlike voice that sounds like Cinnamon and Cranes. She is also compared to Joanne Newsom. Newsom says there is nothing childlike and innocent about her voice. The same applies to von Malmborg, who has the voice of experience. Much of this album has the theme of travel and displacement. Some of the best songs are "Your Mother's Faith" and "Time For The Muse." Other songs like "Return To NY" and "Hollywood" have a Billie Holliday vibe going on. This is a pretty cool record. There is nothing it coming out right now. It kind of reminds me of eight to ten years ago when I first started hearing Morcheeba and other bands like that. Hopefully this is not just a studio project. Hopefully we will get to see some of this music played live.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't call it indie, September 21, 2008
By Trevor Barrios "TMB" (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Return to N.Y. (Audio CD)
Drawing a distinction between "indie" and "major label" isn't especially useful when evaluating a given body of work, but unfortunately that is how many-a-casual-music-listener function. For the record, this was an independent project between two people, but that does not in any way inform the finished product. At least not from this reviewers perspective. A very frail, almost drab sounding delivery at times, but don't be fooled by the verbage - this is the selling point. Extremely ambient in a "sparse loft apartment on a hot Sunday afternoon" kind of way. Although the thoughts and feelings that this music evokes from me probably aren't helpful when conveying the album to you, I'll indulge anyway; the distant keyboard melody is unassuming and often catchy in a stripped-down manner, which proves to be a perfect compliment to the frail female vocals that sound mousy and almost child like at times. The lyrics are whimsical and do not bother with pretentious themes or revelation. They are mostly observational and even conversational in a mundane sort of way. If you were to go back to the 16/1700's and film a voyeuristic color documentary about European royalty with no sound, this would be the musical interpretation of that work. The colors a little blown-out, the camera work a little shakey, the subject matter quietly arresting. That is the abstract narrative my mind produces every time I listen to this album. For better and for worse, that is how I choose to convey this to you. Apologies if the absence of literal reference points makes my review challenging for you, but sometimes visual comparison is the most effective way to hear music you've never heard.
