3.0 out of 5 stars Not Very Attractive, April 17, 2009
There are three of these segments available for video on demand, Censored, Teen, and Taboo. Extremes is the fourth segement. They are all constructed exactly the same, a lot like the VH-1 "I remember the decades", or other MTV produced review show. One, two or three people talk about a topic or a clip and a portion of the film clip is shown off and on. There are occasional artistic clips shown in what is supposed to look like interlaced television screens. About every 10 minutes they run a red ribbon down the screen with a year and some fact that is supposed to enlighten the viewer. Mostly this acts like a commercial.

As a whole these are not very exciting or arousing programs. The education level is OK, most of this ground has been covered before. These are not terribly attractive productions.

These one hour five minute segments actually get kind of boring after the first 15 minutes. The style of this production just gets in the way. Each commentator is filmed in front of a solid color background that doesn't change for all three segments, the framing is a single head shot. Each person talks for about the same amount of time, so there's a rythmn that gets boring.

The commentators - they are a group of film critics, a couple of indie directors, a couple of film actors, and an former playboy playmate. The critics have the least helpful commentary, are sadly shown the most, and are actually very unattractive. There is a young person that has almost nothing to add, his comments are recent memories of how he reacted to a given film. There are at least two male directors that are gay and produce movies that are designed to push the limits of taste. Both were very interesting, more about their approach to film. The film actors are Tatum O'Neal, Dita Von Teese, John Cameron Mitchell, and Peter Sarsgaard. Tatum was mildly interesting. Dita Von Teese (former playmate) is actually one of the highlights of this whole crew, she has a 50's pin up beauty and her comments were on par with the two directors. John did a decent job. Peter was funny at times, and added to the commentary rather well.

Censored was probably the most boring of the group. The territory this segement covered was nothing new. They oddly miss the pre-censorship era of film. This film starts up around the 50's, but moves very quickly to more current film. The examples are "In the Realm of the Senses," "9 Songs", and "The Brown Bunny". The evolution of European film moving to the United States and the influence they weighed. Woody Allen is mentioned. There's a number of ommisions, most notably the Curious Blue and Yellow films. There is a mildly interesting discussion about art versus pornography. The clips are not explicit, they do push the R rated limit with nudity, but never get to NC-17.

There was a fairly high level of disappointment in this segment. John Waters would have been a fantastic, incredible addition. Given that he is listed in the credits here, I was expecting to hear from him. No he is not present. The commentators did not have a lot to add here.
