4.0 out of 5 stars Use it, or lose it, April 30, 2009

The great thing about SciFi is that as far as the plot goes, anything goes. I'm not saying we all don't have an imagination, but at least some of us still use it. Goos Show!!

5.0 out of 5 stars great, but suffering., September 4, 2008
(before reading this, note: i love stargate, both series. this review only includes what i do not like)

though i enjoy stargate atlantis. it suffers from something that has plagued the entire franchise from the beginning, even starting as early as season one of SG1. even the greatest episodes have this slow lengthy period at the the end, that involves nothing more then talking heads, sometimes poorly scripted talking heads. like we have to slow down and talk about everyone feelings. on the Atlantis pilot, the worst line is the last, something like "you know, that could get us in to trouble." its weak, but is short, so i can deal, but that is mostly what these "closing lines" consist of. the worst of, being "the broca divide" from SG1. the episode is good, but has one of the slowest boring endings.
and their system for writing battles leaks through from sg1. this is how battles went in sg1: good guys shoot, we watch enemies die for a while. camera pans, its the bad guys turn to shoot. turn based action. i think this system carries through to Atlantis's way of presenting problems. something happens, Mckay solves, and guess what, something else happens, didn't see that coming.
at least they got rid of the dinosaur carter, just because some people cant deal with canceling SG1 after ten years (the show was dead anyway, after Richard dean Anderson quit) is no reason to bring over someone that i would say was the most replaceable character of SG1. even that aside, her character never had enough depth to say anything new after ten years. her saying pissy lines was mildly entertaining the first dozen times, we don't need to see it even more.
something about Tayla says "give me fewer lines!" Ronan too, that was the whole point of Ronan, man of few words, but now he is the friggin philosopher. and the caveman hunter Tayla, is a computer wiz? right. not saying she should be stupid, but come on, there is some word for how fast humans can except technology. and i think they forget were Tayla comes from.
and their brilliant idea of, character episodes. though i love these actors, none of them have the strength to pull it off alone. Richard dean Anderson, or Micheal Shanks, they could handle it. but not any of atlantis, except maybe Joe Flanigan, and i think they have already done that. just stick with the group thing, its what they do best.
though i admit, season 5 is turning out better then season four. which involved more cliches and SG1 reference then ever before.
