5.0 out of 5 stars Stargate Atlantis is an outstanding series, June 3, 2009
Whoever the reviewer was in Nov. 2007, I think he's a frustrated science fiction writer. I grew up with Star Trek and this series is very satisfying. The characters have depth and are accessible. Rodney the cowardly genius does a marvelous acting job and is simultaneously insufferably insensitive and sympathetic. I love the strong female role models the series presents. I recommend it to my granddaughters because there is quite a range from the gentle Dr. Keller to the Warrior Queen empathic Teyla. In fact this is the only series I can think of where women are consistently in charge of the base operations. Elizabeth Weir was feminine, analytic, and a force to be reckoned with no matter how intimidating the adversary. Samantha Carter is refreshing while being a down-to-earth leader and outstanding scientist.

There are multiple role models for boys as well. Col. Shepherd's diffidence and sarcastic banter is amusing yet the archetypal fly-boy confidence that we North Americans love and different from General Jack O'Neill's. And, while Ronen is not long on talk, he's great to watch and the episode that showed his tracking of the other runner was really interesting. Major Lorne is a classic military guy who loves to paint. Carson Beckett is generous with his caring but also all male. It's a great series.

The bad guys are really bad, except of course for Todd, who is what he is. Even Michael is at times sympathetic while he's experimenting on and killing thousands.

I enjoy the stories, particularly the esoteric ones like The Shrine and the Outcast. I'd love to see Elizabeth Weir reappear in much the way that Carson Beckett did.

It's a real shame that this series is ending. I hope they do make a movie but it's got to be better than Stargate Continuum because it was really hokey where all the lieutenants or subcommanders looked like villains from 1950s B movies (a Chinese in Mandarin dress?! Have some imagination please!).

My hope is that someone with money will see this for the gold mine that it is and will pick it up but keep all the same writers and actors.
