I bought this for my children who are both two years old. This product needs a strap that goes between the childs legs, otherwise they just slide right out of the harness, which is what my kids did. They ended up in my lap for the whole flight. This may be good for a child 3-4 years and up, however this product provides no more protection than the lap belt already on the seat.

I recently purchased this for our return trip home across the country. I purchased it after taking the trip out to the west coast using my 20 month old daughter's carseat on the planes. Using the carseat was a nightmare, including when needed to transfer planes. (The carseat rolling bag Wheely Car Seat Carriermade it easier but not easy enough .) It was such a pain to turn towards my daughter while she was in her carseat in such a confined space.

On the trip home back out to the midwest, I used this product. Overall, it was better than the car seat, though my daughter still preferred being held or standing on my lap to sitting in the seat. So don't let the happy child on the picture fool you. I also liked the fact that this device did not allow my daughter's feet to touch the back of the seat of the person in front of her: it was bad flying out and she was kicking the seat on landing. There is one big improvement would make, and it's the main reason I only give it three stars:

The top strap that goes around the back of the seat does not stay in place well. It only stays in place well if the person behind your child keeps his tray up, which is not likely. The company needs to find a way to make the strap grip better so that once you've got it into a good position it stays in that position throughout the flight. When the strap slipped, it made my daughter slump in her seat. I don't know that the system needs a strap between the legs. Instead I just think it needs a way to keep the upper strap at the proper height throughout the flight.

CARES makes travel a lot easier - there was no need to lug car seats onto the plane and thru security. We also found out that, currently at least, the airline we were on is not charging to check car seats (so pack all the kids clothes in the car seat bag!) so it did not cost more to do so.

My partner took the twins (2 years old) alone on this flight and they did great. CARES were easy to use and quick. The kids liked them just fine. Each is only about a pound so carrying them between flights in the airport was a breeze, too.

Highly recommended.
