3.0 out of 5 stars dual suspension, 6-speeds, bike for 8-12 year olds, May 22, 2009
By Kenneth Garrison "Aubie" (Huntsville, Alabama) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The price is excellent. What I wanted was something for my 8 year old to get used to the idea of shifting and being able to climb those steeper hills. The good news is my son loves it. Here are some problems to look out for.

It is not shipped well. It comes in an unprotected box and arrived at my house all beat up and was missing a small plastic plug that fits in the top of the front suspension. The box had holes in it, so no telling where that ended up, anyway it could've been much worse. The rear derailleur was slightly bent during shipping. The brakes needed adjusting and a good bit of assemply was required. You need to be a bit of a handyman to put it together.

Also, for shorter riders (like my son) the top cross bar is too high and you can't adjust the seat enough.

I went down to the new 'Dicks' sporting goods store to check out their bikes after I bought this off amazon. 'Dicks' had a Diamondback with these features (minus the dual suspension which really isn't needed for a kid) for $169.00 and it was much, much better quality. I was really kicking myself for not spending the extra money, because it was much safer bike to. My son had a pretty bad wreck because the brakes failed coming down a hill (he was fine, but it scared me and twisted alot of the bike up), this was mostly due to my poor brake adjustment and he was new to handle bar brakes. Anyway, that diamondback is also much better to adjust for different heights and is especially good for shorter 8 year olds. Plus that diamondback had excellent shimano components for durability etc.

Well, if you really can only spend $100, this is a good bike, but for the extra $70, you can get an awesome bike that will last for many years.

1.0 out of 5 stars total piece of junk, June 16, 2009
Total dissapointment. I knew the bike was cheap, but should have held out an paid for more for quality. Heavy, cheaply built total piece of junk - will be rusted out and in the trash in a year.

4.0 out of 5 stars What did these other reviewers expect for the price?, January 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this item for my 11 year old, who wanted a bike "with gears, hand brakes and shocks," before reading the reviews here. I was therefore apprehensive, since I expected a bike with shoddy materials and bad brakes. However, I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived. Yes it does take a lot of time to carefully assemble and adjust to make sure the brakes work properly and the gears shift without slipping, but that is what it takes to make sure any bike is safe. These "cheap" bikes fill an important niche: one where the child will outgrow the bike in a year or so, so there is no need to buy an expensive high-quality, long-lasting model. As long as your expectations are realistic, that is, you need to know what you are doing when assembling the bike and understand that in a couple of years the bike will be obsolete, this is an ok buy. One more thing: I got the Amazon card that gave me $40 off, so the bike (with free shipping) cost around $60.
