Editorial Reviews

Product Description

For the explosive Before I Self Destruct album, 50 Cent returned to working closely with DR. DRE and EMINEM as he did on Get Rich Or Die Tryin', his first official album. With DR. DRE and EMINEM producing and guesting, Before I Self Destruct is darker and harder than 2007's Curtis, as shown by the grimy single and video to "OK, You're Right" (produced by DR. DRE), which was released earlier this year. In early September, 50 released the hit single "Baby By Me" produced by POLOW DA DON (FERGIE, T.I., LUDACRIS). Before I Self Destruct continues 50 Cent's phenomenal rise from street culture hero to pop culture icon. Both album and film will be released on Shady/Aftermath on November 16, 2009.

If you're a 50cent fan then this album is a no brainier. There were alot of great tracks on this cd and you can hear 50cent's different frame of mind. As we all know he's life has changed so he's music has followed that. To all the people who said this album isn't good or 50cent isn't the same. Then you are mistaken! You must not like he's music at all then? And you never heard any of he's mixed tapes that he's been putting out for years... If you are new to 50cent's work please pick up he's first album get rich, then work your way over to the massacre, then pick this bad boy up.
Granted I wasn't that big of a fan of Curtis but hey he's made alot of other stuff in-between to make up for it (mix-tapes). Overall if you like hip-hop and you liked any of 50cent's music then this is worth getting. I'm a Game fan as well as 50's and good music is good music I would recommend this album to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some nice Gems, but is it more of the same????, November 28, 2009
One of the things that has endeared me to hip-hop is it's use of samples. I love hearing a song that cleverly mixes the old with the new. This is an element that I have always enjoyed about 50's music. If I was Your Woman being used by 50 is a classic. Also the song I got Swag is strong. The song Stretch is a great hip-hop song with clever role playing and grinding beats. It is very disturbing. I don't know if 50 was just role playing how he used to feel as a drug dealer. I hope his thoughts have progressed since then. It is sinister to hear a drug dealer telling a 10 year old kid "hey, it's a cold world, take some of this and flush your life down the toilet, I wanna get PAID!!!" Also why do rappers like to envoke the name of Charles Manson? Don't they know he wanted to start a race war!!! Rappers do the same thing with Hitler. I can recognize the literary aspect of third person and role playing and so forth, but can kids see this for what it is?? I doubt it. That is why rap is so irresponsible. They glamorize vices to sell records without acknowledging that they are only saying these things for entertainment. Kids see rappers as more authentic than movies like Commando, Rambo, or any other violent movie. This is where rappers need to take more responsibility. They may take some sales hits, but maybe they will be able to sleep at night!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Movie Review - Before I Self Destruct, November 27, 2009
By Dain H. Binder (Indian Orchard, MA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Before I Self Destruct (2009) is an uncompromising view of life in the inner-city that focuses on how things can change without warning. When that happens, you can be forced into making decisions that alter your path and the life of those around you. The story is told from the view of Clarence (Curtis Jackson), who also adds insightful narrative of his thoughts and past throughout the film.

Clarence and Shocka (Elijah Williams) are nurtured and loved by their hardworking single mother. Shocka is gifted academically and excelling in school while Clarence works at the grocery store after his future as a talented basketball player was shattered when he was injured on the court. Coming home one evening Clarence walks by the scene of a shooting without much thought, that is, until the police come to the door with the news that their mother was killed during a shooting. Life gets even harder when Clarence comes home to find an eviction notice the same night he is fired from his job for stealing food to feed his little brother.

After committing an act that opens the door to an illegal life he starts working for Sean (Clifton Powell) as an enforcer. He enforces Sean's enterprise and the code of the streets with deadly force. Shocka's life keeps getting better because Clarence shields him from everything. He is a positive role model at home and keeps Shocka on the right path. As Shocka asks... How long can this continue?

7 out of 10 - Rated R - Overall it is a powerful and thoughtful film that will leave a lasting impression on you. A few hilarious moments are thrown in to offset some of the seriousness. The acting is pretty simple and mostly holds true to the story and life, although a few of the lines from non-lead actors come across unnatural and forced at times. The cinematography was great; making many powerful scenes when combined with the music. I felt some of the sexual encounters where a bit over the top and not needed. Certainly worth the watch.
