5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the Premiere!, February 21, 2009
By Amanda (Dallas, Texas) - See all my reviews

After this week's episode of Dollhouse, I'd say that just about all of my inhibitions about the show have been laid to rest. It's not perfect, but I'm definitely hooked. I can't say I'll become a cult fan, but at least a fan.

This week we learn about Alpha, an Active who experienced "composite," meaning that all of his previously imprinted personalities manifested themselves at once. This caused him to go berserk and slaughter several Dolls and employees of the Dollhouse. Yet, for some reason, he kept Echo alive, sensing that she was special. Alpha escaped from the Dollhouse and was later killed.

Or so the Dollhouse operatives think...

We also got to learn more about Boyd, Echo's "handler" and bodyguard as well as the protocol surrounding the Active-handler bond. Boyd was brought in shortly after the Alpha incident to protect Echo on her missions. This week, she is leased out to Richard Connell, a wealthy man looking for the perfect date. The pair go on an outdoor adventure, complete with white-water rafting and rock climbing. Everything seems to be going well...until Richard announces that Echo has a "five minute start" before he hunts her down and kills her.

This triggers a heart-pounding chase through the woods. I thought this was the high-point of the episode. It kept me completely engrossed and made me want to find out more. The chase was masterfully done because it was seamlessly interlaced with flashbacks and information about Alpha, happenings back at the Dollhouse and FBI agent Bellard's dangerously close search for the Dollhouse.

As Echo gets closer to death, she begins to see flashes of her true self as well as other personalities that were previously imprinted on her. She ends up killing Richard, who with his last breath comments "He was right about you. You are special." It's revealed at the end that Richard's past was completed fabricated. Could this be the work of Alpha, trying to get revenge on the Dollhouse? Is he trying to kill Echo or make her self-aware?

I'm truly amazed at the many layers this show already has. It's only been two episodes, and I'm already invested in the characters and drawn into the world. Dollhouse is a unique drama that's sure to appeal to older Whedon fans who weren't too big on the corniness of Buffy but still enjoy classic, fun Whedon dialogue. This show truly has great character development that makes you genuinely care about the characters.

Sadly, the ratings for this week's episode were down slightly from the premiere. Despite that, both episodes of Dollhouse rank in the top 20 TV episodes downloaded from iTunes. The show seems to be gaining steam and, hopefully, will be around for a little while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome New Series From Creator Joss Whedon, May 21, 2009
This is the much-anticipated series from creator Joss Whedon. The series started out a bit slow but definately picked up by the end of the season. I was very excited to learn that FOX picked it up for another season. Thank you FOX! The potential for this series is endless. Eliza plays the role of Doll very good. For those that might have given up on this series after the first few episodes, I would recommend making it through the rest of the season. It gets good, I promise.
