Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The design of Everio X is a distinct departure from other camcorders, including other Everio models. Not much larger than a smart phone, Everio X is a slab-sided rectangle without the handgrip, protrusions or indentations found on most camcorders. The design allows plenty of flexibility in how the camera is held from below, above, or whatever suits the situation and the user's preference.

World's First 10.3 Mega CMOS Sensor

At the heart of the camera's superior image quality is a 1/2.33-inch 10.3 Megapixel CMOS sensor the world's first to be used in a Full HD AVCHD camera*. The high quality 9 Megapixel digital stills the camera shoots correlate directly to the un-interpolated performance of this CMOS sensor and Bayer array RGB color filter. * As of March, 2009

Full HD 1920x1080 Video with 1000 TV Lines of Horizontal Resolution

For the first time ever, this 10.3 Megapixel CMOS sensor is the source of 1920x1080/60i Full HD AVCHD format video. The camera records at a stunning 1000 TV lines of horizontal resolution the theoretical maximum level of 1920x1080 Full HD.

60fps/5.3 Megapixel Motor Drive Shooting

Everio X offers high-speed shooting, similar to the motor drive function found in some mechanical still cameras. Up to eleven 5.3 Megapixel stills can be shot at 60 frames per second (fps). A great way to capture fast-paced action in high quality digital still images.

5.3 Mega Continuous Stills

High Speed 60fps 11 images
Medium Speed 11fps 11 images
Low Speed 4fps No limit

15fps / 9 Megapixel Motor Drive Shooting (up to 6 images)

For continuous stills with even higher image quality, you can also shoot as many as six non-interpolated 9 Megapixel stills at up to 15 frames per second (fps), a speed that rivals or surpasses what's offered by typical 9 Megapixel DSLR cameras.

High-Speed Recording (up to 600fps) for Ultra-Slow Motion Playback

The camera's high-speed recording function shoots ultra-slow motion video to capture dynamic movement that is not visible to the naked eye. Any one of three speeds 120 frames per second (fps), 300fps and 600fps can be selected; the faster the recording speed, the slower the playback motion. With this function, approximately 2.4-second bursts of video are recorded that are then played back over a period of up to 24 seconds, providing an effective tool for sports technique analysis and nature studies.

60fps/5.3 Megapixel Motor Drive Shooting

JVC's new proprietary optical image stabilization (OIS) system applies camera shake compensation optically using prism technology at the lens entrance to ensure effectiveness throughout the zoom range and allow high quality shooting without a tripod.

Dual Mode: 5.3 Megapixel Stills While Recording Full HD Video
Everio X also allows shooting of 1920x1080/60i Full HD video and 5.3 Megapixel stills at the same time a unique advantage of this all-in-one camera. This way, you won't have to exit the Video mode each time you want to take a still image, thereby minimizing the chances of a missed shot.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Blu-Ray Videos. Does not replace Point&Shoot by any measure., September 27, 2009
By Frank Skomial "fskomial" (Woodland Hills, California) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After VHS, MiniDV, and MiniDVD, this is my 4th generation of camcorder. The video quality is simply great. The 5X zoom ratio is sufficient for most uses. Software supplied covers major basic chores. Tried few video processing 30 days download software and none of them recognizes the camera, but some can use the file produced by it, e.g. the .MTS AVCHD HDCAM format.

JVC hinted in printed paper manual that files can be archived into an external USB hard drive without use of a computer. The "Accessory Guide" recommends Seagate FreeAgent Desk disc. Printed guide has only 44 English pages, but electronic copy of seemingly the same document is twice longer, and contains chapter with detailed step-by-step instructions how to copy camcorder contents to an external compatible USB hard disc, without use of a computer. However, I was unable to backup files directly from camcorder to external USB drive, neither Seagate nor Western Digital USB discs are recognized. Perhaps due to the two male/female hookup USB cables used. The requred menu "Video Backup" never shows up on the camcorder LCD.

Surprisingly the Backup menu shows up when Everio is connected to Western Digital WD TV Live electronic media player using single cable since normal size USB connector exists on WD TV Live, but not on any external USB drive I have. The HD TV Live device has no internal storage, just the pass through video to a HDTV or other USB disc. This concluses that the combination of 2 USB cables (female/male), to make one cable with USB mini male on both ends may not provide all lines and proper connection. WD TV Live media player finds and plays AVCHD encoded video files directly from the camcorder connected via USB port.

This is amazing why the cable industry did not produce yet an USB cable that would have Mini USB male connector on both ends.

I noticed there is a lot more to this camcorder that is not explained in poorly written documentation. E.g. menu Low Light shooting shows up momentarily, but I was not able to open it, since it disapeared during menu scrolling. This setting could possibly solve low light problems that some people complained about.
