This book is a must read for anyone who wishes to understand what Barbara Tuchman called the "Calamitous 14th Century".

Having said that, Tuchman's book is not in the same class as this account.

More than half the pages of the book are devoted to citations in Latin, French, German and English.

To be fair, the book is well written rather than a page turner.

Nonetheless if you wish to have some understanding of what happened to Northern Europe between 1315 and 1322 you need go no further.

One final note: it is possible that the effects of the famine resulted in an enhanced susceptibility of the populations to the Bubonic Plague of 1348 due to the underdevelopment of the immune systems of children growing up in a nutrition deficient atmosphere.

Best regards,

James

I have enjoyed reading this book. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone but those people who are intensely interested in history would enjoy the attention to detail and relationships. I came away with a much greater understanding of the early 14th century in a way I never believed I could. Dr. Jordan is to be congratulated for his great effort.

This is an excellent account of the Great Famine, and quite possibly the only one that exists as a book dedicated to the subject. However, it *is* an academic book and not a popular history. The book is quite dry and does not really get moving until the second or third chapter if I remember correctly. The beginning of the book is dedicated to historiographical topics that are sure to try the patience of readers seeking a popular history style account -- such as, for example, the difficulties in estimating just how many people died in famine and the methodological flaws in different approaches. (I like academic books and I even found this started to get a little tedious.)

With that said, this is an exceptionally important, and difficult, topic that hasn't received nearly the investigation it deserves. Jordan's account is well-rounded and discusses more than just England. I highly recommend the book. Jordan's scholarship is nothing but praiseworthy.

My only criticism is the style in which this book is written. I believe that academic historians can borrow stylistic techniques from popular historians. While I'm sympathetic to the extreme technical and linguistic demands on American medievalists who often cover broader geographic areas than British medievalists, I wish Jordan had made this book more appealing to a broader audience. The topic is so important and it deserves to be more widely understood by the general public. Nonetheless this book is exceptionally fine.
