5.0 out of 5 stars The Intensity of Dollhouse Continues to Build in this Thrilling Episode!, March 28, 2009
By Amanda (Dallas, Texas) - See all my reviews

The intensity just keeps rising every week in the dollhouse. This week's episode, "Echoes," was so fast-paced that the time just flew by and my eyes were stuck to the screen during every second of this action-packed, high-powered episode that fed off the strength from last week and added to it.

This time around, Actives are brought in to help contain a deadly virus outbreak at a local college campus. However, this isn't any ordinary virus; when humans are exposed to it, they start to hallucination and go insane. Supposedly, the mind of an Active is immune to the virus, or at least Topher thinks so....

Echo runs out on an engagement after being exposed to images of the viral campus. She finds the campus, but pieces of her past start to surface due to the familiarity of the location and her exposure to the virus. Sierra and Victor also experience similar glimpses into their own respective pasts and suddenly, the Actives are becoming more aware of their situation -and of their original lives.

Interestingly enough, there's not much going on here with Agent Ballard or among the dollhouse operatives outside of the virus outbreak plot. But instead of following multiple intertwining plots, like in most previous episodes, "Echoes" focuses exclusively on Echo's past life and the process that leads up to her awakening. This created a considerably simpler and more linear plot for Dollhouse, but served as the ideal way to begin the process of Active self awareness.

I won't spoil all of the details here about Echo and the others' pasts, but they are each unique and insightful. The audience doesn't get to see exactly how Eliza ends up working for the dollhouse, but its implied that the events in her flashbacks led up to it. I'm pretty excited to see all of these answers revealed in upcoming episodes and to understand exactly why Caroline decided to sign her name on the dotted line.

"Echoes" is packed to the brim with suspense and excitement. I wouldn't say that this is the best Dollhouse episode so far (in fact, I think that last week's episode was better because of all the plot thickening and intertwining stories), but it really moves the plot forward and gives the audience some new information to chew on. The writing is clever, to the point and, despite the 50-minute running time, completely devoid of any excess fat. "Echoes" is a great new Dollhouse episode that sets the stage for even better things in coming episodes.

Next week Echo and co. try to escape from the Dollhouse. I can't wait.
