5.0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous and Unforgettable Piece of Storytelling, April 4, 2009
By Amanda (Dallas, Texas) - See all my reviews

Okay, I'm admit it -I have some mixed feelings about this week's episode of Dollhouse, "Needs." It started out wonderfully, filled with intense, heart-pounding action, head-scratching questions and phenomenal writing that made everything else in this series look dull in comparison. Truly, "Needs" is the most beautiful episode of this series so far. It really dives into the histories and mysteries surrounding the Actives, the truly sinister games of the Dollhouse and the amazing capacity this show has for real emotion and characters. I was honestly surprised at how drawn into the story I was; "Needs" is storytelling at its finest.

In "Needs," Echo and four other Actives -most importantly Sierra, Victor and November -wake up in the Dollhouse with their real personalities but no memory of who they really are or where they are. The rogues quickly discover that their surroundings aren't as tame as they seem. They are under constant surveillance and if they dare to step out of line, they'll be sent off for a "treatment" and become just as innocent and docile as the other people around them.

Echo and the others put together a plot to escape from the Dollhouse to see if they can dig up information about their past lives. This section of the episode is executed flawlessly. Even though it takes up the bulk of a 50-minute television episode, it just falls away like its completely natural. With the stakes so high, I found myself constantly on the edge of my seating wondering what the rogue Actives were going to do next and what other new secrets they would reveal about how the Dollhouse works.

Even though Echo and co. escape far too easily from such a supposedly high-security place, the reason becomes all too clear in the last ten minutes of the episode. While Victor, Sierra and November go off into the world to find out who they once were, Echo returns to the Dollhouse to save the other Actives.

Once Echo returns she confronts Adelle in a blood-chilling twist that will have you reeling until the end of the episode. Echo and the other Actives' freedom isn't what it seems and the Dollhouse has more control over the situation than was originally thought.

"Needs" is an amazing episode that felt like it was going to be pivotal in the Dollhouse universe and completely change everything -that is, until the very end. It's not that this was a bad ending, only that I felt a little cheated after such a fresh plot that seemed to take the show to a brand new level. I thought this would change how the show functioned, but, after a little thought, it made little to no sense to have such a big change so early on in the series. I hope this means that Dollhouse will survive past the first season.

Despite that small feeling of being cheated -I can't wait for more Dollhouse.
