I like the pictorial timeline depicting the first acknowledged African American President of these United States; however, I do recall that there was a Black President either after or during reconstruction that has not been acknowledged by America. Whatever the facts may be, I have and will continue to collect documentation of our current President, Barack Hussein Obama II.

I purchased the book for my sister's Christmas present. Image the oohs and ahhs when the gift was opened. My sister was extremely touched by the personalization of the book, stated that she will keep the book in a protective cover so that it can be part of a family heirloom that she can pass on to her son or daughter. Great gift. Now everyone in my family wants one!

1. DON'T WAIT

Only the first 10,000 copies are at the reduced price ($[..]), compliments of HP I believe:
[...](And no, I don't work for them.) After that, the "donated paper supply" runs out, and the books are supposed to be $[..] each.

2. PREPARATION

A step-by-step preview of the personalization process is here:
[...]

Bonus: It also shows a good portion of actual pages from the book.

3. MULTIPLE COPIES

You must order each book SEPARATELY from amazon, if you plan to personalize more than one book where each book is different.

4. JUNK-MAIL FOLDER

After you order, look for an email from "no-reply@theobamatimecapsule.com". If you don't see it within a few hours, check your Junk e-mail folder. If you still don't see it, just go to the link above and type in your amazon.com email address.

5. GETTING STARTED - IT'S EASY

The personalization process is very well laid out, and it saves your work if you get interrupted.

6. DECIDING WHAT YOU WANT - CAN BE TOUGHER

It can take as little as 5-10 minutes to personalize the book, but chances are it'll take a half hour or more because you'll be all wishy-washy about which photos to include and what you should write, if anything. It's helpful to remember that it's hard to mess up - the book is beautiful and amazing already. And there's honestly not that much to customize: you're just adding a few personal touches.

7. THE DEADLINE

You only have 10 days to personalize it once you order it. Otherwise, you get a standard book.

8. IDEAS FOR THE DEDICATION PAGE

The quote is certainly inspiring enough that you don't need to change it.

Bid to take print-on-demand mainstream

From The Financial Times, By Joseph Menn in San Francisco

The first serious bid for a print-on-demand bestseller began publishing
on Wednesday, as Rick Smolan launched The Obama Time Capsule, as a
customisable book which will be printed only after it is ordered.

The foray of Mr. Smolan, a photojournalist whose A Day in the Life of...
series has sold millions of copies, into print-on-demand, could validate
the genre in the same way that Stephen King's first electronic-only book
brought instant credibility to that then-nascent market.

The move comes as the print-on-demand industry, where books are printed
only after they are ordered, is growing, with "Espresso Book Machine"
kiosks this month beginning to spring up in libraries and bookstores,
printing copies on the spot for paying customers of titles from Wiley &
Sons, Simon & Schuster and others.

Print-on-demand has been one of the few bright spots in the otherwise
slumping book industry. Sellers include works by self-published authors,
more of whom are selling respectable numbers of their editions by mail,
and out-of-print or out-of-copyright books that are reproduced by
various companies.

Mr Smolan's inspiration for the book came on election night, when his
exuberant friends were snapping pictures of themselves standing next to
the television as the results rolled in. "Everybody in that room wanted
to remember that moment the rest of their lives," he said.

But instead of putting out yet another Obama-makes-history tome, Mr
Smolan thought he would try to capitalise on emerging technology that
enables mass customisation.

It's important to note if you wish to order customized/personalized copies for different people, you must order each copy separately. If you order more than one copy thinking you will be able to customize each one, it will not work - you will receive multiple copies of the same book. (that's the only reason I rated this as a four star as it could be more clear about the order process for ordering more than one custom copy) So, if you want to personalize books for separate individuals, simply place a separate order for each book you wish to customize. The process is fun and simple. I only wish there were more pages to customize. The technology is Crazy Cool! It Rocks! I can't wait to receive each order I customized for my daughter and son featuring my favorite photos of them and their artwork. I'll report back once I receive my books : )

Update: My teenagers received their personalized books and LOVE them! While at work, I even received a text from my teenage son thanking me for it. I'm sure many may understand a positive reaction from a teenager willing to text/mom with a 'cool' and a thank you is something.

Seeing some of the critical remarks - this book is more than a 'scrapbook' of photos. To me it is a testament to our democracy and the graceful transition of parties. This is also called out in the book as well as many other facts and photos. Even the affirmation included from Colin Powell about the love each of the candidates have for our country is moving. It is a keepsake and one I'm going to order for myself!

I love the print-on-demand technology - it is revolutionizing the publishing industry. The hp technology is removing barriers to entry for authors/illustrators to share their stories and art.
