5.0 out of 5 stars Unique, phenomenal storytelling of a completely new level, April 13, 2009
By Amanda (Dallas, Texas) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
It's difficult to follow last week's unforgettable episode of Dollhouse, but I'd say this week's episode, "A Spy in the House of Love," was also pretty darn awesome. It feels like Dollhouse has completely busted out of its shell and come alive. I really hope this change is here to stay because if the show can deliver this caliber of storytelling each week, then Dollhouse should be around for a good long while.

"A Spy in the House of Love" is told in a different format than previous episodes, but wasn't too complex or difficult to follow. In fact, I found it to be a welcome change from the ordinary. The show began with the heart-pounding ending that made me jump right from the start. The story then flashes back to events from the previous 12 hours that led up to the horrifying, and somewhat gruesome, ending through the eyes of four Actives: Echo, Victor, Sierra and November.

The dollhouse operatives discover that there's a spy in their midst who has been feeding information to the NSA about their operations. To find the culprit, Sierra is imprinted with a kind of secret-agent personality so she can infiltrate NSA and discover the identity of the spy. However, Topher, who wasn't exactly satisfied with that course of action, decides to imprint Echo with a kind of Sherlock Holmes-spy catcher personality -after being approached by Echo in her "doll" state with the desire to help.

Meanwhile, November is sent back to Agent Bellard under her Melly personality. Bellard, in her absence (and despite losing his badge) has become even more obsessed with bringing down the Dollhouse and has become some kind of crazy conspiracy theorist...which is highly entertaining. However, he soon finds out that Melly isn't what she seems and that the Dollhouse is watching him even more closely than he originally thought.

In yet another side plot, Victor goes to "yet another" Miss Lonely Hearts' engagement. The viewers, however, are treated to another amazing, yet unexpected plot twist here: the client is none other than Adellede Witt herself! I find the scenes between Adelle and Victor to be some of the most touching of the entire season. Adelle is finally given some much-needed characterization and, for the first time, I felt like I truly understood the character and felt sorry for her. After this episode, I'd even dare to say that she's my favorite character.

The abundance of side plots may seem like too much, but they are hardly overwhelming and the director and editors did an amazing job of keeping them manageable and easy to follow. This is a genuinely amazing piece of storytelling that pushed many of the Dollhouse actors to their limits and delivered. For the first time this season I'd say that the show had above average performances and moved me to truly feel something for the characters. I really didn't want it to end this week.

I haven't heard any word so far about whether or not Dollhouse will be back for a second season, but it tends to pull in solid ratings each week and sells well on iTunes. It's hard to believe that there's only four more episodes left this season. It just seems like there's so much more to explore here -I don't see how Fox can cancel it after only one season. Of course, that's what people were saying about Firefly, so I'm still a little worried about the show's future.
