Music and Gaming Via a Revolutionary Controller
Like the music that inspired it, DJ Hero allows players to experience music in a new revolutionary way through through its game-specific controller. Included with the DJ Hero software, the DJ Hero controller is a combination turntable and mixer that immerses you into authentic DJ culture allowing you to scratch, cross-fade, and beat match. The turntable half of the controller features three color-coated buttons used to direct action during gameplay and a realistically rotating turntable. The opposite end of the controller contains the mixer controls in the form of a lateral fader allowing for switching between tracks and mixing, a knob for additional effects and a button for capturing "euphoria," a star power-like point bonus.

In addition, the mixer portion of the controller detaches to accommodate left-handed players and contains an out of the way compartment holding a D-pad and conventional controller buttons for easy console navigation. Taken together, both halves of the controller allow players to customize their mix with a variety of effects and samples transforming a face in the crowd into the life of the party.

Gameplay
Gameplay in DJ Hero is reminiscent to games in the Guitar Hero series. Musical prompts stream towards players on one of three color-coded ribbons; red and blue which correspond to the two tracks that the player is able to simultaneously or individually manipulate, as well as a red one between these two, used to insert samples. In addition to hitting individual notes and samples, players are also challenged to scratch on command by pressing the appropriate button for the track and sliding the turntable up or down as indicated on the ribbon. The game also provides players with a chance to turn back the clock on earlier action via its "Rewind" feature. This ability is monitored via the rewind meter that levels higher with successful play, and and when full allows the player to rewind the song to fix errors in their earlier performance. The reward for precision is the build up of points, which can be temporarily doubled via euphoria power with the push of a button on the mixer end of the controller.

Rule the Hottest Parties
In the tradition of Guitar Hero, which brought gamers into the world of rock ‘n’ roll, DJ Hero places players in the DJ booth at some of the hottest clubbing scenes from around the globe. Party in venues reminiscent of real world locales from around the globe including an ultra plush and sexy Hollywood Hills style mansion, to an open air beach club in Ibiza.

Play Modes
Although DJ Hero contains engrossing single player game options, including a career mode, much of the action in the game surrounds its wealth of multiplayer modes. These include both online and offline multiplayer competitive and cooperative modes: including DJ vs. DJ, DJ + DJ and DJ + Guitar.

Set List
The DJ Hero set list is constructed of 100 songs, crafted into more than 80 two-song DJ mixes. These mixes are the product of both the creative talents of internationally known DJs such as DJ Shadow, DJ Z-Trip, DJ AM and Daft Punk and the game development team. All songs used are new to the Guitar Hero family of games and are pulled from a wide array of genres, including pop, grunge, soul, R&B, techno, hip hop, and house.

5.0 out of 5 stars DJ Hero: Supporter - Reasons Why, October 29, 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Okay I won't waste your time if you are not into music games and you think a person should learn the real thing I can't help those people. But if you are interested in a different music game, like music games, and would appreciate a normal point of view (non-critical one) please read on.

So the I was unsure if I could play DJ Hero, I have no idea what I am doing, never been to a club in my life, but I can play this. I am okay at Guitar Hero play hard on guitar and drums, but scratching is another matter. But the controls are easy, start on beginner if you are unsure. The notes and gameplay make more sense when hearing actual music. Watching game play videos online didn't help me feel like I could do it. The tuturials are easy and really get you normalized to the settings. The game doesn't (for me) cramp up my hand like the guitar does, I don't need to sit in a certain position to best play (even though a flat surface would be good). The game is good.

Now if you want to learn real DJing this won't help you, it WILL though help you appreciate what DJ's do. I mean to think of the beats like they do. Who would know to mix songs like that, and the exactness you have to have in order for a record to sound good is verys specific. I must say I thought DJ just stood there and looked cool, but they have to pay attention and really listen to what they are doing. They are artist and I appreciate them now after playing the game.

If you like Guitar Hero only because of the rock songs, you might not enjoy this as much because it is Hip Hop R&B and Techno song based. It does have a club / urban feel to it, I like it. I like all types of music. Guitar Hero and Rock Band has songs that I remember in High School, these have songs I remember before that and after mixed nices. If you have a good sound system, you feel you are in the club and it will be important to play the song right.

But this may be an early note and maybe because I didn't fail yet, but I DONT SEE A FAILING SYSTEM - there were a few times I thought that I should have been booed off the stage of the DJ on the game would through the disk across the room but I didn't get that, I made it through each song.

So far I love the game, I refused to go online right now and get super embrassed at my non-DJing skills, but the play is simple, enough not to frustrate you where you aren't haven't fun, there are higher levels for you who figure they need impossible to even get a thrill. It is worth your money though if you think you can enjoy it.

And let me add, not everyone is musically inclined, not everyone has time or the money to learn real instruments and DJ skills and such. So please let us enjoy the games because DJ Hero (along with other music games) open our eyes to what is out there, new music, styles, and appreciation for the real things. Don't be a hater be a supporter.

4.0 out of 5 stars DJ HERO on the ONES and t.... well just the ONES!!!, November 2, 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I have always appreciated a good rhythm game and DJ hero is just that. The game boasts a good song selection for everyone hip-hop, rap, pop and a little rock. If you have listened to a radio in the past 30 years your going to recognize a majority of the songs.

Hardware- Lets start with the actual turntable its self. It looks amazing for starters. The turntable is very well constructed feeling heavy and durable. I have never spun records but I would assume this is what it would feel like. You have the normal colored buttons on the turntable. To the left or right, whichever you decide to put the mixer table, has a Fader, Effects dial, Euphoria button (that lights up when the euphoria meter is ready) and full D-pad and controller buttons.

HARDWARE
Pros- feels sturdy, heavy and durable
- Realistic feel
- Full spinning turntable
- looks amazing you wont mind having this setting on your coffee table

Cons-Buttons on turntable can become slick(from sweat or your potato chip grease stained fingers) after a while of play making the heaviness of the turntable cause you to scratch for a little to long on some parts or slip out of your hand.
- The fader has to be moved from left to right and back to the middle which is hard to do precisely since where the fader clicks in the middle can be hard to find and can become frustrating when going for a streak.

GAMEPLAY
The gameplay is a lot like all the guitar hero games. It reminds me of the Guitar Hero games as it is easy to pick up very hard to master. Most gamers who are not experienced DJ's will stick with the medium difficulty. You have a green, red and blue record stream that comes down the screen like previous guitar hero games. The green and blue are tied to the two separate tracks while the red usually controls some type of effects noises and the freestyle parts on tracks where you can add in samples(like the classic air horn noise or Flavor Flave's YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAHHHHH BOOOOOOY!) that you select from a set before you start each event. Euphoria is practically the same as star power the music gets louder, multiplier doubles and you don't have to fade the tracks in and out until the euphoria meter runs out. One of the coolest gameplay features is the rewind. Imagine your friends are watching amazed at your DJ skills (the game looks hard to play to bystanders and you really mimic a DJ to some extent) you go on a streak and acquire a rewind. The hook comes in "my name is CHICKA CHICKA SLIM SHADY" rewind..."my name is CHICKA CHICKA SLIM SHADY" and the crowd goes wild! Another great feature is the Party Play. Let the game be the background music for your next party and you can join in anytime. The game amps up the difficulty pretty quickly not enough to be annoying but definitely challenging and very rewarding. The best part of all you can't be booed off of the stage you just wont earn as many points with a bad performance. You will need stars to unlock everything. There a few songs that support the guitar hero controller for a second player to play. I haven't used this feature but I have noticed there are only a handful of songs that support it.

GAMEPLAY
Pros- great slightly familiar gameplay
-Party Play
-Rewind

Cons- Hard to stay on a streak sometimes with having to be precise on the fader parts
-you don't have the ability to record your own samples for freestyle sections and there are only 10 or so sample sets for freestyles possible more added in DLC?
-No create your own DJ you have to use the ones they provide for you that you unlock as you go but the all have a good selection of customizable clothes and tables with different skins

SET LIST
I'm going to be honest I have never really liked DJ mixes and house music all that stuff. It always seemed to me like they never get to the most memorable parts of song. Now I have a new understanding of the music genre. DJ's do this for a reason to get listeners to anticipate that classic part of the song that everybody knows. The set list is pretty massive well over a 100 songs. This seems like a lot of songs and they are all widely popular songs that most will know. Almost all of the songs are two song mixes which is what you would expect from a DJ game. You can't help but react to the music and neither can friends watching. Just like recent rhythm games you can make your own set list and either play or put the game into party play mode and jump in and out of the song if you want.
SET LIST
Pros- Huge Set list of very popular songs.
-Music that will get you moving

Cons- none really the music is what this game is about and you will enjoy it.

OVERALL
DJ hero is a game that I think will quickly gain popularity. Once people come to terms that this game is fun for solo players or with friends it will take off. The music is amazing and the first time you scratch through Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" vs. Shlomo - "Beats" or any of the other memorable songs you will think your ready for the club. This game is a buy for sure if you're on the fence don't base your experience off of a few minutes at your local best buy you wont get the full experience. It's best to set down through the tutorials and start from the beginning. If you have had dreams of DJ'ing or just like being the life of the party and appreciate some good music pick up DJ hero today.

This is my first review of the thousands of games I have played in the past 14 or 15 years of gaming so feel free to comment on my review. I plan on reviewing plenty more games in the future since I am a weekly gamestop visitor so im a pretty avid gamer I usually put in a good 20-25 hrs of gaming a week in all different genres.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great game.....but.., October 29, 2009
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great game, but i have a few things i want to cry about. My biggest issue is the turntable. Its too small. I tried first to play with the default settings, that place the buttons on the left close to the fader, and within minutes my wrist was killing me. Luckily you can change this so the buttons are on the outside. But the biggest problem for me is trying to scratch with the blue button, its so close to the middle of the turntable im moving the whole unit. I was using the stand that came with the Renegade Edition, wich is actually pretty nice and sturdy, then i tried it on my lap and then on an ottoman with pretty much the same results. Its not so bad i wont play, but it can be frustrating. I hope they come out with a bigger one, say 10" compared to the 7" or 8" this one seems to be. So, other then that, I'm really enjoying this game. The tutorial with Grand Master Flash was a great way to get a feel for what level i wanted to start playing at. (im sticking to medium for now) Tons of stuff to unlock, you can customize what samples you want (to an extent) and the music is just awsome. There aro so many great mixes on here its silly. My favorite so far is Bel Biv Devoes Poison, and Cameos Word Up. The carrying case is well made and as i said before is pretty sturdy when converted into the stand. It holds the game the turntable and the legs for the stand. The Jay-Z and Eminem cd has some good songs on it. Was it worth the extra 70 bux? As of right now... yes. As with most limited edition things i buy, ask me in a few months and my answer might change =) but it always seems like the thing to do at the time right? There are 5 levels of difficulty and anyone can play this game. Beginner mode a 5 year old can do while on expert i personally need an extra hand, (stupid fade spikes) Im not sure if this will have the following that guitar hero has but if you ever wanted to be a dj but never got around to it, this is a game i think you will enjoy.
