Product Description

The 1/4 Speed Grid has a 1/4" honeycomb cell size to effectively narrow the beamof light from your portable flash unit, producing a small circle of light on your subject. Fits most any shoe mount and most handle mount portable strobes, including Canon 420 though 580 and Nikon SB24 though SB800. Attaches quickly and easily to Honlon's Speed Strap mounting system (not included, sold separately). Usable honeycomb area is 3.5" x 2.25" (appr. 89mm x 58mm)- simply measure the front outside dimensions of your flash lens to assure fit. Rugged ABS/polycarbonate construction. Patent pending design. Its surprising that a square thingy can produce such a nice oval feathered light - better than a snoot if you care about the uniformity of the shape of light, and you like it feathered.

Still, the honeycomb is kinda fragile, and no solution has been provided for carrying it in a camera bag (I use a padded envelope). Also, the mechanism by which it attaches to the flash is klugy (strap and velcro). I'd rather see a rock flash solid adapter of some sort with attachments snapping/locking on with a "click".

Never had another grid to compare it to, but its good for a quick light shaper, albeit not as flexible as a combination of cinefoil, paper, tin-foil, cardboard, and gaffers tape...

PS - 3 stars means good, 4 stars means excellent, 5 stars I almost never give, since it implies no room for improvement and that is rarely the case.

This is a very well built grid, and lightweight too. It'll take a lot of effort to break it. However, it is somewhat bulky and expensive. It is oversized on my SB-600 and SB-800. You can buy their $20 accessory that attaches to your flash more tightly, but that's another $20 we're talking about here.

After trying it out, I thought it was a nice accessory but simply over-priced. Also it just didn't fit well on my little SB-600/800 and I didn't want to buy yet another accessory for better attachment. So I returned it and built my own grid out of black straws. You can build your own in less than an hour with a bunch of black straws (I got mine from Corner Bakery type). You just need maybe 3-5 straws, cut them up in equal pieces, and glue them together. Custom built grids fit much much better on the flash than this one-size-fits-all version, and by building my own, I know how to make even more in the future.

If you have extra money to burn, by all means get it. It's nicely built. But if good fitting and/or price is an issue for you, you should try building a custom made grid.

It is very easy to install and remove, it gives you the expected result. Very useful piece of accessory in my portable equipment bag. I got the 1/8" too and I use both quite often.
