5.0 out of 5 stars Dora Saves The Crystal Kingdom Software Review, September 29, 2009
Dora Saves the Crystal Kingdom is an educational software for preschoolers. The recommended age range is 2-5 years. In a fun and engaging way, kids can learn computer skills and practice their shapes, colors, letters and numbers.

This is the first software package I've tried with my preschooler. She quickly learned how to play the adventure games and enjoyed collecting crystals, finishing up words, and counting and matching different shapes. My daughter is at the high end of the recommended age range, and she was most excited about the patterns games and the letters and words sections. The games held her attention for quite a while, and she wanted to play again the next day.

Depending on your child's familiarity with the computer in general and with shapes, numbers and letters in particular, she may find some sections more engaging than others. She does not have to be a Dora the Explorer fan to enjoy the games. There are two levels: easy and hard. Once your child becomes familiar with all parts of the software, you can make the games more challenging for her by switching to the hard level.

Overall, we enjoyed playing Dora Saves the Crystal Kingdom. It is a good introduction to learning how to use the computer and provides educational value by letting kids practice letters, numbers, colors, problem-solving and other age-appropriate skills.

2.0 out of 5 stars poor product installation,, November 22, 2009
By Kristoph "Kristoph" (Seattle, WA, USA) - See all my reviews
The product was installed on Mac OS X. The installation was frustrating. It failed to work on a user account with parental controls enabled. Once installed it failed to work without an internet connection. So the product was entirely unusable on a computer appropriately configured for a child in this age group.

The game includes a number of puzzle sections as well as arcade gameplay. The puzzles were generally interesting although somewhat variable in terms of complexity. The game makes no attempt to adapt to the skill of the player making some games trivial to complete while others overly complex. The arcade gameplay requires the use of the keyboard for navigation which is fine as long as the child is familiar with the arcade/keyboard gameplay. The arcade levels are all the same in terms of gameplay and so tend to become boring quickly.

The game - for no apparent reason - enforces a linear gameplay until the player has completed the level. Thereafter the player can go to any completed level. This restriction is terribly silly since it means every new player has to go through the whole game before being able to go to their favorite level.

In general I would not recommend this product. You can get 10-20 games on the iPhone or IPod touch for the same cost, many of which would be more entertaining and useful for children on their own, and certainly so as a group.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun for all those Dora girly girls!, January 28, 2010
This was again another great game by Nova and Nick Jr. It was colorful and bright with great interactive skills for kids. Although, this is most definitely more of a game for PreSchool Girls ...not so much for little boys. I particularly enjoyed the the music and memory section of the game and think that kids will really enjoy that as well. The Letters and Words section was SUPER and a great way to start those reading skills at an early age. That section is one that I could see going over several times to reinforce early reading and sounding out skills.

Over all this was a great new game for preschool girls and I think that the different aspects would keep a little girl really interested for quite a long time.
