Big Sur is my absolute favorite book. Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie is one of my favorite musicians. Put these two together along with Jay Farrar and the result is a beautiful musical experience. The documentary is very well done and really helps the reader understand Kerouac's descent into madness in Big Sur. (Honestly, far better than the movie version release this past year.) Highly recommend.

They really couldn't go wrong with this music package. I like Kerouac, I also like Gibbard and Farrar. If you can find this particular deluxe package buy it. You will not be sorry

Ben Gibbard and Jay Farrar are both highly respected rock musicians. But they're more than just technically good they're artists. So I was delighted as a Kerouac fan when I learned that they were bringing out a tribute album to the man. Didn't know what to expect, but it's certainly not a disappointment. What it is, is an extremely laid-back meditative country-rock album, which is fitting because Kerouac's writing was often introspective, and apparently the lyrics here are taken from Jack's text in his novels. If you're looking for a hard rocking road album this is not the one, but if you're looking for a contemplation of the inner working of Kerouac's mind - this is the one for you.

Kerouac was a great writer. Maybe not in the technical sense, but a great storyteller. Before watching this movie and listening to the album, I had read On the Road. While I enjoyed the book, something was missing. Being a big Ben Gibbard fan, I downloaded the album and listened to it. I picked up Big Sur and read it. I watched the documentary when I was about 1/3 of the way through the book. This documentary really gives great insight into Kerouac's life and helps the reader understand Kerouac and make sense of Big Sur. After watching the documentary, the book is that much more irresistible and enjoyable. I recommend, even if you decide to read On the Road or another one of his works, pick up this, watch the movie. Since watching the movie, I've read 12 of Kerouac's novels/novellas and am on #13.
As for the music, it's excellent. Perfect for indie/lo-fi/singer-songwriter fans.

Having read "On The Road" in college in the early sixties, this album grabs that "beat" era.
Got to hear them live on KCRW and after listening, had to buy the CD.
It is a selection of songs/tunes that you have to listen to and enjoy the more you hear them.

"One Fast Move Or I'm Gone" tells the story of Jack Kerouac's journey to Big Sur, California in an attempt to escape from the perils of fame and alcoholism. Kerouac laid down the whole scene himself in his novel "Big Sur". The film retraces his steps while offering up passages from the novel. We get the straight poop from some of the folks who were there such as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Carolyn Cassady and Michael McClure (his dependable pretentious self). In addition, a number of artists (i.e. Tom Waits, Robert Hunter) and academic types chime in.

The film lays out many of the things that make Kerouac great and, unintentionally, makes clear the fan mindset that drove him to the edge and, eventually, over it. As for the first, Kerouac's need to write, even through the most traumatic and dreadful experiences, comes through very clearly. The location filming underscores the environment that this alcoholic poet was living in and does a great job of bringing out the beauty of Big Sur, but also the ominous qualities of nature there. In "Big Sur" Kerouac went to great lengths to note these opposing images and their impact on his fevered mind, and it is nothing short of amazing that a man could, first, function artistically under such circumstances and, second, have the desire to do so.

There are some insightful comments from Tom Waits, always clever and entertaining, not the least of which was if Kerouac were alive today and undergoing such an ordeal, we would just dope him up and he would have a decent chance of being blissfully ignorant of any existential quandaries. Of course, he would never write another word and we would all be the less for it.

That is actually the thematic heart of the film and, in many ways, all things Kerouac.
