Introducing the Official Match Ball of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Jabulani. The name means "to celebrate" in isiZulu. The design features eight panels, bigger sweet spots, and an all-new grip 'n groove profile. The grip is enhanced with a raised micro structure to give strikers more precision, while aerodynamic grooves allow this ball cut straight through the air like an arrow. The 11 different colors on the ball represent the 11 official languages of South Africa, the 11 diverse South African communities that exist throughout the country, and the 11 players on the pitch.

The adidas Innovation Team rigorously tested the new Match Ball for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, first under the toughest laboratory conditions possible, later also with professional players and clubs on the field of play.
Testing & Development of the adidas Jabulani
adidas has been producing high-performance match balls since 1963 and is the world's leading football producer. Still, it took adidas well over three years of extensive research and development to present the adidas Jabulani, its best-performing ball ever. Thanks to a revolutionary Grip 'n' Groove profile and a totally new 3D panel shape, the newly developed Grip 'n' Groove profile provides the best players in the world with a ball allowing an exceptionally stable flight and perfect grip under all conditions. The players can now show their true skills, as the quality and performance characteristics are exactly identical every time they kick the ball.

The adidas Innovation Team (a.i.t) has rigorously tested the new Match Ball for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, first under the toughest laboratory conditions possible, later also with professional players and clubs on the field of play. Scientific tests were conducted together with the Sports Technology Research Group of the University of Loughborough, one of the leading institutions of its kind worldwide. These tests confirmed that the adidas Jabulani is more round and has a more stable flight than any key competitor top match ball.

FIFA designed a quality concept to guarantee the highest standard of balls for the best players in the world. Only after a series of stringent tests is a ball awarded the FIFA-Approved hallmark. Tests executed in the adidas football laboratory in Scheinfeld and at the Testing Centre of the University of Loughborough prove the adidas Jabulani does not only meet these FIFA-Approved standards, it exceeds practically each of them.

Circumference Test
A consistent circumference is important to allow optimal control during dribbling or driving a football. In order to calculate the average circumference, each individual match ball is measured at 10 different points.

  • FIFA-Approved Standard: 68.5 cm - 69.5 cm
  • adidas Jabulani: 69,0 cm (+/- 0,2 cm)

Permanent Roundness Test
Only a perfectly round ball allows a player to fully capitalize on his skills. The more perfect the sphere is, the more balanced a ball will be in flight, the higher will be its accuracy and the predictability of its flight. The new 3D panel shape harmonizes the energy displacement and minimizes the amount of corners, while the larger panels allow for a cleaner kicking area. The diameter of the ball is measured in 16 different places, after which the average is calculated. The difference between the highest and the lowest diameter must be within very strict limits.

  • FIFA-Approved Standard: Maximum 1.5% difference
  • adidas Jabulani: Maximum 1.0% difference

Water Absorption Test
A wet and heavy ball behaves quite differently from a dry one. It flies through the air more slowly, has a low bounce and is more difficult to curl. adidas' patented Thermal Bonding technology makes a football virtually waterproof. As a result the new Match Ball shows completely homogenous performance characteristics when playing in dry or wet conditions. For the water absorption test, the ball is pressed and rotated in a container of water 250 times, after which the ball will be weighed. The water will also be weighed before and after the water uptake test.

  • FIFA-Approved Standard: Water absorption: no more than 10% weight increase
  • adidas Jabulani: Water absorption: 0% weight increase

Perfect Weight Test (420 to 445 grams)
Each professional game is played with a number of balls. These different balls all need to perform the same. Consistency in weight is crucial. If the ball is too light or too heavy, it might move unexpectedly in flight.

  • FIFA-Approved Standard: Weight between 420 and 445 grams
  • adidas Jabulani: Weight 440 grams (+/- 2 grams)

Shape and Size Retention Test
During an average game the ball is kicked approximately 2,000 times. However, in the last minute of overtime, the ball needs to perform identically to the way it did in the first minute of the game. In order to test the shape and size retention, the ball is fired against a steel plate 2,000 times at 50 km per hour for the FIFA Approved hallmark. After this test, only minimal changes in air pressure and roundness are allowed and the air valve and stitching must remain undamaged.

  • FIFA-Approved Standard: 2,000 cycles at 50 km per hour
  • adidas Jabulani: 3,500 cycles at 50 km per hour

Drum Test
The drum test was developed by adidas to guarantee high quality and durability of the printed surface, the unique design and look of the ball. Like the adidas +Teamgeist, the adidas Jabulani also features the underglass print technology, providing the Jabulani with the best and strongest surface material ever and guaranteeing the ball is more durable and will hold its unique look much longer.

Uniform Rebound Test
Players need to be able to anticipate how the ball will respond in order to control a pass using their chest, thigh, or foot. For this test, the ball is dropped ten times onto a steel plate from a height of 2 meters. The difference between the highest and the lowest bounce must be no more than 10 cm.

  • FIFA-Approved Standard: No more than 10 cm
  • adidas Jabulani: 143 cm measured at 20°C

Loss of Pressure Test
If the ball loses air during the game, it will be difficult to predict and may not respond consistently, making long passes and deep crosses almost impossible. For this test, the ball is inflated fully and three days later its air pressure is measured. It must not have lost more than a specified percentage of its air.

  • FIFA-Approved Standard: Loss of pressure maximum 20%
  • adidas Jabulani: Loss of pressure maximum 10%

About adidas
The vision of company founder Adolf Dassler has long become reality, and his corporate philosophy the guiding principle for successor generations. The idea was as simple as it was brilliant. Adi Dassler's aim was to provide every athlete with the best possible equipment. It all began in 1920, when Adi Dassler made his first shoes using the few materials available after the First World War.
The adidas name dates back to 1948, deriving from the first two syllables of Adi Dassler's first and last name. One year later, Adi Dassler registered the Three Stripes as a trademark.

After a period spanning almost 70 years, the Dassler Family withdrew from the company in 1989, and the enterprise was transformed into a corporation ("Aktiengesellschaft"). French-born Robert Louis-Dreyfus was Chairman of the Executive Board from April 1993 to March 2001. It was he who initiated adidas' flotation on the stock market in November 1995. adidas--a name that stands for competence in all sectors of sport around the globe. Today, the adidas product range extends from shoes, apparel and accessories for basketball, soccer, fitness and training to adventure, trail and golf.

Product Description

#42040 Jabulani means to celebrate in Zulu, one of the 11 languages of South Africa, and the design of the Jabulani has 11 colors to honor those 11 languages, in addition to the 11 communities of South Africa and and the 11 players on a team. The 11 colors also honor the fact that this is adidas' 11th FIFA World Cup ball. Constructed with eight new thermally bonded, spherically shaped, 3 D EVA and TPU panels, the Jabulani is perfectly round and has been equipped with a new Grip'n'Groove technology. Grip'n'Groove is a textured treatment that ensures the Jabulani flies straight and true. The Jabulani is designed for never before seen power, swerve and control. 4.0 out of 5 stars I like it a lot, July 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: adidas World Cup 2010 Official Match Soccer Ball (Sports)
I am a bit older than David Beckham and I play 2-3 rec games a week with players ranging from 17-55 years old. I spend about 50% of my time in goal, and the other 50% is split between midfield and forward.

I bought one of these about 6 weeks before the world cup so that my friends and I could play with it and see what it was like. The reviews have been mixed. It is within a few grams of the maximum FIFA approved weight, yet people regularly comment that it seems light when they first handle it. I don't find it so, but it did take a few kicks to get used to how it plays for long balls and corner kicks. I'd call it a little (not a lot) bouncy.

As a field player, I love the way it plays on the ground. It gives great control for dribbling and moving downfield. I also like the way it shoots. Perhaps if I was a more precise shooter, I'd feel differently, but I am happy to hit the quarter of the goal I am aiming for, and I can do that as well with this ball as with most others. I like shooting this ball.

As a goalie, I am not as enthralled. The ball seems to knuckle off a striker's foot very easily, giving it that no-spin, slightly unpredictable flight path. When I can get a glove on it, the grip is great.

Overall, I like it a lot. Most of the people I play with agree, but definitely not all of them.

1.0 out of 5 stars WORST BALL EVER, June 21, 2010
This review is from: adidas World Cup 2010 Official Match Soccer Ball (Sports)
This ball is a complete disgrace. I am like the third best goalkeeper in England and I can't even stop this thing. A buddy of mine kicked a slow roller to me and I completely muffed it in front of billions of people. Now people in my country will never forgive me for this. And it wasn't even my fault! IT WAS THE BALL!!! It dipped and swerved and I could only get my fingertips on it. I hate this ball. Now James will be the goalkeeper for England but I bet he can't stop this thing either. It's like impossible.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a great ball but certainly not worth whining about!, July 3, 2010
This review is from: adidas World Cup 2010 Official Match Soccer Ball (Sports)
I am like one of the top 500,000 goalkeepers in the U.S. and I bought this ball for the novelty of it. I didn't like it for use in drills or game play as it was not the truest ball I have ever played with but I never had any problems STOPPING it when rolling to me; like with any other ball I just kept my body in front of it and used sound fundamentals to pick it up and secure it...I did this several hundred times routinely. What I did not like was the movement at higher velocities coming at me. I am sure handed and will usually catch while others block or punch and I found myself having to block and punch more.

In reality while I returned the ball to the store after a month I should thank this ball because if anything it helped sharpen me up since I had to react to its sometimes unpredictable aerial movement. After all the keeper position requires sound fundamentals and quick reactions so it helped this 40 year old rusty coach and rec. league player step up my game after not playing for several years.

I would not recommend this ball for match play...it is too expensive and actually favors the goalkeepers because it is harder to kick on target for field players.

If you want a novelty to display or simply remember the many magical moments of the 2010 World Cup I would buy the less expensive "adidas World Cup 2010 Repliqué Soccer Ball" from Amazon for around $25.00 but if you want the real thing and can afford it I would check out World Soccer Club, they have a link for "FIFA WORLD CUP BALLS" where you can find the replica of the match most memorable to you. Every match has the official ball with the two teams playing stamped on them used for the match and you can buy the real deal; so it looks just like this ball but has "England" and "USA" printed on it for the US v. England match, for example (hope that made sense, could have been better written).

Nice design, sleek look and interesting topic of conversation. I would be surprised if the previous reviewer is who he claims to be but I guess with so many professionals over dramatizing the sport I shouldn't be. Soccer/Football is a great game but when a player blames the ball that is just sad! I felt bad for the keeper when I saw the fundamental error in the first match that went for a goal...I did this a couple times before I turned 10 and it was hard to watch but I stood by the keeper and expected him to bounce back. But, after reading the review I have to say I don't feel bad for him anymore as the review was just a long whine about the ball, the ball, the ball. It is never the balls fault, get over it or you'll never improve your game.
