4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Little Netbook, November 25, 2009
By JonnyK (Ashland, OH) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I didn't really have any intentions of purchasing a netbook since I already have a 12.1" laptop (HP TX1000), but my laptop is showing signs of dying and this little doo-dad was on sale at $230. I plan on purchasing a 15"~ laptop once the 12.1" laptop dies as this is not a laptop-replacement for power users (no CD/DVD drive for starters).

First I have to say the design is very nice. The black and silver looks premium and sophisticated, but not gaudy. The inside is a little more basic looking, but the silver hinges and reflective frame around the screen give it some pizazz (although the sticker residue did NOT come off nicely and I ended up leaving light surface scratches when removing)

The track pad is pretty small compared to a normal sized trackpad on a laptop, but is very usable. Only takes a minute to adapt. The side scroller works very smoothly (unlike some other laptops I've tried). The button on the bottom acts as a rocker from side to side for your left and right click.

Weight and thinness are certainly commendable, but you can get the measurements from most product descriptions to see how this compares to others. In my comparisons, I found this one above average (but not best-of-the-best).

Performance is nothing short of remarkable. VERY FAST (but only for basic tasks). Opening internet explorer, browsing around the computer, etc. makes you believe you have a supercomputer, but once you try to play HD video on Youtube, you definitely reach the limitations of the system (regular Youtube videos work fine, even full-screen).

The 0.3 megapixel web cam doesn't seem like much compared to the 1.3 megapixels of other netbooks/notebooks, but this is definitely enough for webconferencing and making fun videos for yourself. It's not like you're taking pictures with it.

Even with only a 10.1" screen, the text is very readable without going to a lower resolution and then not being able to fit everything on the screen. Very pleased in this respect as it was a concern for me.

The laptop screen is difficult to open though... maybe there's a technique to it, but it's completely flush on all sides except where the chrome gateway logo strip is in the center. Also, the sound is not loud at all. Full blast volume is 60% of what you'd expect, so be sure to bring portable speakers or headphones...

As far as connectivity, it gives you everything you need. Everything is on the sides (rather than the back or front) for easy access without getting in the way. There's a network connection, VGA (monitor) port, USB port, mic and speaker ports on the left side and the power cord, two usb ports and a multi-function card reader on the right.

Overall this netbook really impressed me. It is definitely going to be grabbed more often than my 12.1" laptop for its lightweight portability, quietness, and lack of heat - all without sacrificing speed for simple tasks. I only hope this netbook surprises me with reliability in the years to come.

Update/Edit:

Today I put in iTunes and was able to get the sound up to par by maxing out both Windows Sound and iTunes. I was able to do the same with Windows Media Player

5.0 out of 5 stars great size, good value for the money, November 4, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
i haven't had this netbook very long but i'm impressed already. although its a little small, it does everything i want it to do. hard drive and memory are ample, and its light weight is incredible. since its made by Gateway, i'm sure i'll get many years of use out of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Occasional user (not my primary computer)., December 24, 2009
Length:: 7:57 Mins

And this review is designed for the casual user, not those who are using it as their primary device, because in my opinion, the computer, while solid, is not enough to stack up to other comparable netbooks that have other features (more expensive, of course) which make them better options. For the occasional user this netbook will more than suffice. Please note that my model is the LT2016u - exclusive apparently to Verizon Wireless - but the feature set is identical to this model except for one key difference: The battery. The 2016u has a 6 cell battery (longer in the rear) unlike the 3 cell on this one. Means greater battery life, which is why it's different from what Amazon reports. Otherwise the two are identical. If you're opting for a netbook like this one go for the newer models offered here, or the one offered by Verizon.

I'll be candid. I got this netbook because I'm lazy. I have a Gateway P-7805u FX Edition - Core 2 Duo P8400 / 2.26 GHz - Centrino 2 - RAM 4 GB - HDD 320 GB - DVD?RW (?R DL) / DVD-RAM - GF 9800M GTS - Gigabit Ethernet - WLAN : 802.11 a/b/g/n (draft) - Vista Home Premium 64-bit - 17" Widescreen TFT 1400 x 900 ( WXGA... (but I have the WUXGA screen) which is my primary computer. It stays in my living room, because it's too heavy to lug around. I travel on occasion and needed to have something lighter that I could take with me for basic browsing and reading. Also, if I'm reading something on the FX and need to go to another room but keep reading the article, I use the netbook to remote to the FX to continue where I left off. It's quite convenient, if not lazy, but whatever.

Some bits about this netbook. The motherboard supports a total of 2GB RAM. The SoDIMM you need can be bought on Amazon or at your local BB or other electronics store, or Crucial if you need to. If you're running XP (which it comes with), you likely won't need any additional memory for basic browsing and email. If you're loading Windows 7, you don't need the additional but it helps. I opted to load Windows 7 Ultimate on here and it works just fine with the 1GB. The graphics card is sufficient to run Aero and any programs without a major delay.

Comes with a 160 GB hard drive. Note that this is a physical platter drive, not a solid state drive. What that means is that the drive is still subject to shock, so if this drops, you could end up damaging it. Also, the seek speeds will be slightly slower than with a solid state, and the laptop weighs a little more because of it. The tradeoff is that solid state drives are prohibitively expensive right now, which is the reason this netbook can be had for so cheap. What I've discovered though is that it's much more practical to just get a SD or Memory Stick Pro of sufficient size and use that to run files. They load much faster than when they're local to the computer.

The Intel Atom processor is sufficiently powered to handle most basic tasks. This version of the Atom does NOT support 64 bit - since the board can't handle more than 2GB of RAM anyway, you don't need 64 bit anyway - so make sure any and all programs you buy are 32 bit. Also, I don't agree with Amazon's assessment of the battery life, and maybe that's assuming XP. Running Windows 7 I can get around 5-6 hours of battery life with the thing unplugged and only wireless running. If I have the 3G running, same thing. It's only if I have both going where it's around 3 hours, but generally you don't need both.

I'll probably drop a video to show the netbook in more detail, but for now, there you have it. Recommended if you need an occasional use netbook, not as a primary computer. Will it work as a primary computer? Sure. But doing extensive work in Microsoft Office or Adobe, I don't find to be practical due to the limitations (small screen, slightly slower performance) compared to a reasonably priced full laptop that can do a better job.
