My favorite band has done it again, October 6, 2009
I love this new album by Noah and the Whale. Their last album was my favorite of 2008 and this is my favorite so far for 2009; I can't think of a better album released so far. This time they are using electric guitars, softly (except one beautifully and tastefully distorted with feedback part), and less acoustic (gone is the ukulele); along with more interesting percussion arrangements (please stay in the band, Doug! Do medical school later in life, have fun now! It is a once in a lifetime experience). I heard Charlie in an interview state that he likes Slow Club right now, and I can hear their influence and it is very nice indeed. I really like the sound, and feel they have made genuine progress as a band and I love all the songs; the album shows real growth as artists and features even more depth than Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down. It has a great mood about it, very kind of down and thoughtful and comforting. I understand that the subject matter is about the end of Charlie's relationship with Laura Marling, which is interesting in its own right. My favorite song is "My Door is Always Open" (a great song, and I liked that Charlie goes above his usual monotone [which I like] range toward the end of the song; it would be nice to hear more of that as I love his voice) and my second favorite is "Stranger". My least favorite is "Slow Glass", while "Love of an Orchestra" is happy. There is a film that comes with this CD which I haven't seen yet, but I really look forward to. I love the music coming out of England right now, with this band being at the forefront in my mind, and with others such as Laura and even other interesting efforts from artists such as Emmy the Great. They seem to be influenced by the antifolk scene of NYC, and I like their music better than their influences' from here in the states (they all seem to love Diane Cluck, for example). My first impression is this is an album I would like to be played at my funeral and I imagine I will listen to it more than any other this year, besides their last effort as I've already listened to it so much this year. They are very definitely on the level of their influence Neutral Milk Hotel; they, too, are a classic, and the years ahead will prove me right (if there is any justice in the world!). I find this album and they are better than the artists who they mentioned on Subterranean as releasing their favorite albums: Smog, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Jens Lekman, and Tom Waits. Very solid effort; please keep it going, I can't wait to hear more. I feel this is a band that will stay with me for a lifetime, or at least a very long time. Thank you, Noah and the Whale for making the best music around right now in my opinion. You guys are so great! (You need to play the states more often, particularly California! I am sure UC Davis would love to have you! I look forward to seeing you in San Francisco later this month!)

Amazing album but very misleading product description, November 12, 2009
When I ordered "The First Days of Spring," I expected it to be the CD+DVD edition, since the product description said so. When I received the product, I was dismayed to discover that it was only the audio CD! There was no DVD at all, and I was really looking forward to seeing it after viewing the trailer. Why include in the product description that there's both a CD and DVD when there isn't?? Buy this album if you only want the CD, because it's very calming and peaceful. It's a bit more melancholy and reflective as compared to Noah and the Whale's first album, but very lovely indeed, with more instrumentation. DON'T buy this album if you want the DVD, buy the deluxe version instead!

Great follow up, October 6, 2009
While their first album was fun drive around and sing along music. This one is a more personal album that deals with loss and emotion. The music is still great and its definitely worth buying. One of the best albums of 09(so far).
