I've come to expect uneven recordings from Brian Wilson, and this is no exception. There are moments of brilliance that make this recording worth buying. But there are plenty of rough edges here as well.

I'm not sure why he doesn't actually sing all the way through the songs. A lot of the time, what his voice is doing I wouldn't call singing. Sort of chanting or something like that. And "I Loves You Porgy" is a song for a woman. It's a touch creepy.

But it's really worth a listen. I think you'll like enough of it to add it to your collection

It's fascinating that the majority of reviews for this album are five stars or one star. Because it is probably neither. A five-star album should be perfect, and this album is not. But it is an immensely enjoyable, satisfying, and often inspiring production and performance by Brian Wilson and his band, with no small amount of its success due to the Gershwin brothers' incredible talents.

It seems as if somebody giving this album a one-star rating must have a private agenda, because there is simply no way it is a failure in any respect. Brian's voice is incredibly strong throughout most of the tracks, although it's not always perfect. You can hear a few slurs and intonation problems, but let me hear you sing when you're his age. Many of the vocals are near-flawless, and if you compare them with some of his recent work, this is a major improvement. I simply can't explain anybody hating this album or faulting Brian's vocals. If you want to nitpick, he didn't even sing perfectly on "Hushabye" or "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times." But that doesn't make them any less classic.

I think that some of those giving it five stars would probably want to give it four-and-a-half stars for not being flawless, and I'd probably be in that group. I would probably give it a solid four-star rating, but as I feel the need to cancel out one of those ridiculous one-star ratings, five stars it will get from me.

The plusses for me are many, including production touches and arrangements that are as uniquely satisfying as the best of Brian's work. Not all are gems, and those that aren't you can't really criticize as being bad -- they're just not as unique as you want to hear from Brian. But they do add variety to the album, and that was obviously one of Brian's intents.

When I first heard of this collection by a former Beach Boy I chuckled because I could not think of a more incongruous mix with Gershwin. I like Gershwin well enough but it's not my favorite kind of music nor is beach music. Out of curiosity, though, I clicked on the sample and was just blown away by that first note. I liked the music more and more as I sampled the rest of the tunes. Brian Wilson has a whole new perspective on this relatively old music and I highly recommend it.

Just got my pre-ordered copy of "Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin" in the mail. This is a release I have been looking forward to with great anticipation. I figured that given the significance of this undertaking and the potential criticism that it might induce the album was either going to fall flat on its face or be simply sensational. I spent the better part of last evening listening to this disc and I am very pleased to report that Brian Wilson has done it again. "Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin" succeeds on just about every level. It is an album that is at once extremely interesting to listen to and highly enjoyable as well.

Critics are already touting "Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin" as one of the year's best releases. I couldn't agree more. New York Magazine says "Wilson has created gorgeous and unexpected arrangements that strip away decades of familiarity." Although this disc is relatively short by today's standards (about 40 minutes) there are several highlights worth mentioning. "Summertime" is one of the greatest tunes ever penned and Brian Wilson does Gershwin proud and makes this venerable favorite all his own. I was particularly taken by Wilson's instrumental version of "I Got Plenty O' Nothing". This one will get your toes tappin' lickety split. Meanwhile, experience Brian's take on other Gershwin favorites like "It Ain't Necessarily So", "I Got Rhythm" and "I've Got A Crush On You". Outstanding! And sample Brian Wilson's fine arrangement of "Someone To Watch Over Me". As far as I am concerned that one ranks right near the top of the list of tunes in the Great American Songbook. Now what makes this project so unique is that with the permission of the Gershwin family Brian Wilson was able to complete two unfinished Gershwin tunes.
