These are the poems Natalie Merchant recited to her daughter and later created music turning them into songs. The musical styles and arrangements vary greatly. "The Girl in Pink on the Milk White Horse" is one of those songs that I can't get out of my head...but that is a good thing. I can see the rider "cantering over the sawdust course." The set comes with a little bound book about the poets with a picture of each one and a brief biography. A wonderfully gentle set of songs.

In an internet download age, it takes real guts on Natalie Merchant's part to release a true concept album, and one that ranks among the best ones. The first thing you notice is the book, beautifully printed on lavish paper, containing all of the lyrics (poems, actually) and brief biographical essays about the featured poets.
Then, more important, there's the music. Which is as rich, varied, textured, sophisticated yet highly enjoyable as you could possibly imagine. Almost every facet of popular music is explored, and NM succeeds in mastering them all. And the voice...
Disc 1:
1) Nursery Rhyme of Innocence and Experience - with Irish band Lùnasa and a lush 13 pieces string orchestra: an evocative song about sailors, children's dreams and coming of age. Ends with a beautiful orchestra-only coda.
2) Equestrienne - A "circus song" that might well be Ms. Merchant's "Being for the benefit of Mr Kite". The strings underline a 3/4 melody and NM overdubs herself on harmony vocals on the chorus. In the quiet passages you can hear the "breathing" of the pump organ, which seems to echo the snorting of the horse the song's about... nice touch, don't know if that was intended though.. ;-). Drum rolls (strangely unaccredited) introduce the crescendo of the brass arrangement. Again, a delightful coda, with "pizzicato strings" this time.
3) Calico Pie - one of Edward Lear's poems set to a delightful melody. Very up-tempo and joyous banjo & fiddle spark off the light-hearted mood here, again NM doubles her voice on the chorus. The extra touch here is the dulcimer solo on the bridge. Great song.
4) Bleezer's Ice Cream - A stroke of genius. One of the clear winners on the album.Read more ›

This is a beautiful example of music from the talented and creative Natalie merchant. I have loved her gentle stye with poetry and stories in recent years and recommend it to anyone.

If you like Irish folk songs and Natalie's voice, this is worth ten stars. If you loved some of Natalie's old albums and were hoping to hear songs in a similar vein, this will disappoint you. I'm in the latter group, so I'm disappointed. I gave three stars because her voice is a treasure on any material and I certainly respect all the work she put into making this 2 CD set with a small book worth of lyrics, pictures and notes. The package is certainly "deluxe". There are even a few songs I'll want to hear again. But, I'll probably end up givin this to a friend who loves this kind of music.

This album has a great folk sound to it. Basically they are songs based on poetry that Natalie would read to her child, only retooled into song form. While the poems seem a bit obscure and the references scattered, the end result is nothing short of phenomenal. It just makes you feel good listening to it. And Natalie's voice is as beautiful as it's ever been. A plus in getting the two cd set, besides getting more music, you get the cds cased in a book, that not only has the lyrics but a brief synopsis of the poet's life as well. you also get the story behind why she chose to do this album as well. the book is nicely made and comes in a slipcover. You get 26 songs for a reasonable price and the packaging is professional and nice. most albums nowadays do not come with lyrics let alone stories accompanying them. As for Natalie Merchant you simply can't go wrong with her albums. There are always things to discover and love. This is recommended for anyone who loves folk music, poetry and of course Natalie.
