I didn't know quite what to make of this movie. If it was to entertain, it was more of a downer. If was to inform, it was incomplete in its telling. If it was suppose to be about the Runways, it was really more about Joan Jett and Cherie Currie.

The whole tone of this movie was somber and bleak. There didn't seem to be one "bright spot" in the whole telling. Not that every movie has to have rainbows and butterflies, but I don't recall one moment of this movie where the characters expressed a constructive and positive reaction to any scenario. It seemed what little laughter there was, was in the midst of some kind mischievous. This is definitely not a "warm and fuzzy" movie. Having such a bleak vibe, and portraying the characters as crass and crude, it was hard to relate to any of the characters and have any empathy. It's a shame, because the movie was very well cast. Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie were excellent choices, as were their performances. The other band members seemed to get lost in the shadow of Jett and Currie, which is a shame because I'm sure the others contribute to the success of the band. Most notably understated was Lita Ford. Ultimately, the movie is not so much about the Runaways as it is about two people - Jett and Currie - who initially needed each other, but ultimately wanted different things and went their separate ways.

Or maybe it does. Punk was all too often more about having the right snotty attitude and fashion (non)sense than making meaningful music. This irritating and predictable "biography" of the notorious 70's girl group the Runaways is heavy on the 'tude and snottiness and light on engagement or well-defined characters. Or maybe the point is that these characters, apart from Joan Jett whose in-your-face bad-assedness is at least counterbalanced by her innate drive and single-minded devotion to making music, were not serious about anything except escaping from LA suburbia and being rich and famous. There's a lot of heavy-handed play-acting and pose-striking in this offering but precious little insight or genuine drama. Hysterics, profanity, and campy performances substitute for character development and a melodramatic teen angst is all the motivation we see from the Runaways, most of whom apart from Jett and Cherie Currie are treated as afterthoughts by the filmmaker. If this sketch of a raw punk band composed of white suburban girls is designed to shock, it quickly becomes tedious and the very opposite of empowering. Whatever feminist point is trying to be made here is lost in histronics and bogus preening. If the Runaways were such champions of "grrl power," why are they so meekly in thrall to Kim Fowley's creepy svengali figure? Why do they buy into all the usual macho bulls*** just because it's tarted up in feathered haircuts, lipstick, and leather pants? That's not consciousness-raising, it's just imitation and selling out.Read more ›

Other than Kristen Stewart's portrayal of Joan Jett, the movie suffered. I was expecting more from Lita Ford role as well as Led Zeppelin connection. I see the bisexual side of Joan Jett was exploited but true. Should have been more music footage.

I was expecting more. This is really not the Runaways - Its Cherie Currie and Joan Jet Story and really not the full story. If you are a runaways fan it is an ok watch. But if you have followed them over the years and read the other books this is only a partial. The acting is good, just not enough content.

Our Dear Hannah Dakota Fanning, When I first learned you were going to sing in a rock and roll band, I thought "Awesome!". I can't help but think Britt's love of music and her compassionate roles of troubled girls influenced you to take on this formidable project based on the book "Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway" by Cherie Currie, whose character you so brilliantly depict. (i.e.: Brittany Murphy formed her own band in the 1990's, she had rock and roll parents and clashes with young Dakota(2003) who is into classical music in the magical "Uptown Girls" - The Special Edition DVD is a must have! - plus Britt is in "8 Mile" and "Tom Petty". ) Yes Kota, I remember your much acclaimed depiction of a troubled girl influenced by the music of Elvis Presley in "Hounddog" (2007).

I think it's neat you are friends with Kristen Stewart, just 4 years older than you. Both of you were in "New Moon" (2009) and as the ambitious guitarist/songwriter Joan Jett in "The Runaways"., (a ground breaking, all girl mid-1970's band) the two of you bond very close as you as Cherie become a bona-fide rock goddess.. So close the two of you feel secure enough to engage in experimental sex with each other
(Edgeplay, a 2004 tell all expose by actual band members gives us a lot more details on the Runaways.)

The other members of the band have their moments. Michael Shannon as Kim Fowley is a raw, propelling energy whom pushes you girls beyond your comfort zone to be sexy and tough. He redeems himself by getting the Runaways a record deal.

I think you do an admirable job of capturing the conflicts Cherie experienced, especially about her home life Your acting is natural, unforced and intense. You mesmerize us with your eyes.
