The provider of this Instant Video, Oregon-based DVD-R mfr. SINISTER CINEMA, specializes in obscure 'B' unit movies. Their regular DVDs offer no bonus features such as commentary or deleted scenes. Dubs are from unrestored film stock, thus quality varies with source material condition. None are pristine, yet none are so degraded as to be unviewable. Some of their transfers are in fact quite decent.

Silent screen cowboy star William S. Hart plays a flawed individual in BLUE BLAZES RAWDEN. He is to be precise a rather villainous sort.

'Blue Blazes' is a lumberjack come to town to spend some hard-earned cash. He gets involved in a poker game that goes wrong, and makes a move on a saloon-owner's woman right while the man is there watching. The proprietor, 'Ladyfingers' Hilgard, is no angel either. These two stags immediately lock horns in a one-on-one brawl that leaves Hilgard dead and Rawden with control of the town and gorgeous Babette DuFresne all his own. Then Ladyfingers' mom and kid brother arrive from England and again Blue Blazes shows a lack of character by deceiving them on how Hilgard perished. That he tries to redeem the dead man's reputation for their peace of mind doesn't fully absolve Rawden of his sins. The story has an unusually bleak ending.

Parenthetical number preceding title is a 1 to 10 imdb viewer poll rating.

I have always loved the silent films since I was a kid. Grew up with seeing Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton on the tv. My parents grew up seeing them on the silver screen, even though probably only here and there, as they too were a little too young to catch it when it all happened. In my collecting, I began to wonder where the origins of the Western came from and began looking for the early films available. Bronco Billy is said to be the first cowboy on the screen. He was not too handsome and rough, but had a heart. Just as William S. Hart portrays himself in the films he did. Hart had stage training for years before he got into the movies. His face could say so much in his films - this one: Blue Blazes Rawden - I think shows that strength of character he had to show the emotions and pathos, as they call it. Fortunately, there is about a dozen films of his available via Amazon or through other sources. I highly recommend that you watch this film! Good story and good action!
