I bought these for an old Dell 4700 I was rebuilding for a friend. The speakers offer excellent sound for the price. With the volume turned up on the speakers), on the computer and in iTunes, these little 3x3x3 cubes produce more than enough volume. You can also adjust the sound with the EQ in iTunes. These speakers combined with a $5 web cam and a memory bump, all for under $70, should keep the old Dell current for another couple of years. Of particular note, both the audio and USB cable are 40" long and hard wired to the left speaker. If you keep your CPU on the floor, you may need to consider extension cables.

Just OK

The good:
The speakers are small but put out quite a bit of sound which I like because my desk is kind of small and I don't like clutter on it anyway, so I can keep these right underneath either side of my monitor.

The bad:
The bass is noticeably missing which was expected for a cheap pair of speakers, however I am still surprised at the range of sound the speakers deliver.

The ugly:
If the speakers are on and volume at its regular level and no sound is playing you can hear a fairly loud buzz/static/ring coming from both speakers. I have checked the wires and I have checked using other speakers and headphones to make sure it wasn't my motherboard. These cheapo speakers just have a very poor quality noise filter or none at all. I find they work best if I turn up my system volume all the way, and keep the speaker volume down low, which minimizes the buzz, but it is still noticeable when not playing music. I have to turn the speaker volume all the way down when they are not in use, otherwise they drive me crazy. During use it is hard to notice the buzz.

If I had to do it all over again, I would spend an extra 7 bucks and get the equivalent Logitech model (S220) with included sub. The only reason why these speakers get more than 1 star is because they were only 15 bucks and still very usable as long as the volume is adjusted properly or turned all the way down when the speakers are not in use.

Deep rich sound

I just wanted some speakers for my computer but didn't expect this level of quality. Very deep rich sound for such a low profile and low price. Very much worth the price.

Update: I've been listening to these now for a few weeks and am blown away by the quality. I'm listening to Manheim Steamroller's "Yellowstone" and it sounds like I am in a symphony hall (or at least really close to it). Great deal!

For the money, outstanding

We had an iMac (older, white model) with built in speakers and were fairly happy with the sound from them for general music listening while working. Upgraded to a Mac Mini, which has only a tiny/tinny built-in speaker and decided to try these external speakers for more sound. For 15 bucks we couldn't be happier. Had them plugged into USB and going in 30 seconds out of the box (no external power needed). They are at least 5 times as loud as the old iMac's built-in speakers, and much clearer but in any case the sound quality seems very good to me. I do hear bass as well as higher tones. Obviously they are not going to crank it out like a big stereo system but at near full volume they were too loud for me sitting nearby (playing the Beatles' "Paperback Writer" as my first test song.) I believe these could definitely annoy the neighbors in an apartment building or dorm. Your mileage (and hearing), of course, may vary. Minor criticism: am thinking of putting some kind of screen across the front to keep a pencil from getting stuck through the membrane or other inadvertent damage. The silver you see in the photos is a thin paperlike/metallic membrane that I believe could be poked through pretty easily.

You plug one of these into both your USB port and your headphone jack (on a Mac anyway) and the other speaker then plugs into the first one. Initially adjust volume dial on back of the first speaker (it controls both speakers), and then you can add/subtract volume from your keyboard as usual.

I will update this review if these fail or disappoint in some way later.

Fantastic speakers for the price

I was looking for a low cost set of speakers to use with my Toshiba tablet or cell phone when I found these. The reviews were good so I took the plunge. Wow! If these hold up long run they are a fantastic find for the price range. I will most likely use them in the office full time. First impressions are that they feel solid & look well made. The sound is great for such a small, low cost, speaker system. I have been listening to them for 8 hours in the office tonight & tried numerous types of music. Listened to some rock (Gaslight Anthem - the 59 Sound), some street brass funk (WWOZ Streetwize 2010), some jazz (Bebel Gilberto), some classic rock (Electric Light Orchestra, Jim Croce, Eagles), even some soul (Songs from the House of Soul). On all counts they have deliverd clear, crisp, and full sound. I have zero complaints. While I have not tried any metal I am sure they would do fine. (since I will be using them in the office I probably wont ever listen to metal here anyway) I have kept the volume at 50% which is more than adequate for use at my desk. In fact it is loud enough that volume must be turned down to use the phone etc. They have been plugged into the USB port on my Toshiba tablet & have worked without a problem. I have now cleared out a new home for them in a desk drawer as they will be staying at the office. I should also mention that I used to custom build desk top computers & had used Artic Cooling's power supplies in many builds. Since those were a quality item I was hoping these would be too. (Artic Sound is a subsidiary of Artic Cooling of Switzerland) Well done Artic Cooling! I would recommend these to a friend.Read more ›
