I agree with a lot of what was written in the previous review by Laribrook. I have watched probably more Top Chef than strictly necessary and I was excited to see Top Chef: Just Desserts. It was another way to get a Top Chef fix. However after watching the first episode, my fiance and I are both disgusted. The judges are fine, but the contestants are incredibly catty, seemingly inept, and just unpleasant. The first episode was filled with bitterness and fighting between the contestants, and they had known each other for only a few days! The preview of the 2nd episode looked like it had interesting baking and cooking in it, but the emphasis was definitely placed on more infighting, threats of violence, drama, and general nastiness between contestants. I liked watching Top Chef mostly for the food and because I liked watching people cook over a season. This season I can't say I like watching any of the contestants and the food is definitely not a priority on Just Desserts.

I LOVE Top Chef. I have faithfully watched every season since it began. It's my fave reality show ever. Just Desserts is a good concept, since you get to see great sugary creations which have always eluded the traditional chefs. However, while the judging panel is wonderful, the contestants seem to have an exceptional knack for not being able to deal with the pressure. I don't know how they chose these contestants but when the drama centers around crying and not being able to do the tasks without flipping out (in the very beginning of the season) something is wrong. It just doesn't feel like a 'best of the best' pasty chef competition because of that. I'm sure they are talented but I hope if they do this season again all of the contestants will be well prepared for competition. I really could only recommend watching this while all other Top Chef versions are on hiatus. (I still love you top chef! sorry!)

Frankly I don't agree with the reviews below. I thought TCJD was a nice twist to Top Chef as the dessert and pastry world isn't covered well in the Top Chef series. Yes, there are some quirky personalities, some rivalries and tensions between some of the chefs, but after a few episodes you begin to appreciate the desserts and chefs characters a bit more and the drama becomes a side note. I think Season 1 is always a difficult one because it's trial and error. I found the conclusion frustrating only because I was sure of the winner and it wasn't whom I felt deserved the title, but often that's how it goes. The drama between chefs is going to always be a factor in all the Top Chef series, but if you can deal with a little drama, (frankly, I think I cheered out loud when one crazy chef had an unexpected early departure from the show)... overall TCJD is a fun ride!

I love Top Chef. I watched every episode when I had cable, and now I buy every DVD set that comes out and watch it all with glee. I enjoy the mainstream show quite a bit and also the Masters spinoff. I was so excited when I heard about this show as desserts is always the thing in Top Chef that seems to plague contestants. Savory chefs just struggle with the idea of sweets it seems. It is so notorious, I'm pretty sure it was the founding idea for this spinoff.

Many of the celebrity chefs and judges seen on Top Chef and Top Chef Masters make appearances here to lend credibility and weight to the show. It helps some, and I enjoy Gail as the main contestant-judge interface, although she doesn't deliver the bad news quite as well as Padma. She almost seems happy to kick people off the show at times, which is a source of constant laughter while watching to me. The head judge chosen though lacks the confidence and almost regality that Tom can deliver on the main show though. He seems almost flippant and flat affect at times and just doesn't seem to pull his weight in terms of authority in the show as a head judge.

The show itself seems fine at first but as the season progressed, I noticed that I disagreed many times with the manner in which the challenges were administered. It seemed that there were hidden rules to each challenge that were not properly expressed in the initial instructions and they put a lot of blame on the contestants for not doing the exact thing they wanted. I felt these rules were too tight and rigid and not nearly explicit enough, and several times I felt contestants where kind of cheated out of their effort. Of course this season also had contestants who just didn't follow the rules at all and said "so what" as well, so maybe that put them on edge.

We are fans of the Top Chef series but this competition was very hard to watch. There was too much conflict, poor behavior, vile language and overall disappointing cooking. I watched with my children and I was really ashamed of the contestants as an adult. Thumbs down and definitely not a keeper. Shame on you Bravo for putting this out!
