.
James J. Jeffries, who appears in this 1932 Poverty Row programmer as ring referee, won the world heavyweight crown in 1899 by defeating titleholder Bob Fitzsimmons. He retired undefeated six years later, unretired in 1910 and challenged reigning champ Jack Johnson as a "Great White Hope" in Tex Rickard's famous "Fight of the Century." Jeffries' corner threw in the towel in the 15th round.

Jeffries at 57 is paunchy, bald and devoid of once magnificent muscles. He must've been in pain watching two scrawny actors flailing away at each other in the ring. Fight sequences here are obviously undercranked; that extra speed makes them all the more laughable.

CAST TRIVIA:
Regis Toomey (Jimmy) appeared in nearly 200 films, mostly in support. His first name was John.
Dorothy Sebastian (Adele) was a former Ziegfeld Girl, also Buster Keaton's mistress from 1929 to '35.
Earle Foxe (Filmore) wore the black hat (opposite Tom Mix's good guy) in the original DESTRY RIDES AGAIN (1932).
Eddie Woods (Ralph) was Jimmy Cagney's co-star in THE PUBLIC ENEMY (1931).

They Never Come Back, 1932 film

The film begins in a room where a boxer is being prepared for a fight, the main event. Jimmy Nolan gets a telegram. The fight commences. The people cheer and shout. [Does it look real?] Jimmy's left arm is hurt, and he loses. The crowd jeers. His arm didn't heal properly, his career is over. He gets a job in a night club as "Assistant Manager" (bouncer). The have dancing girls for entertainment. Jimmy throws the wrong man out of a dressing room. But the owner keeps him on.

Jimmy likes Adele, and so does owner Philmore. The dancing girls high-kick to show their steps. Later there is a shortage from the cash drawer. Was the cash planted on Jimmy? He goes to jail. Ralph tells his sister Adele about the frame! What can they do? Jimmy gets out and learns about the frame. "None of us are perfect." Jimmy has a plan to win $1,000; he will box against a top fighter.

Jimmy does well, but his left arm is troubling him. He scores a knock-out in the last round and wins $1,000. Jimmy talks to Philmore, there is trouble and the police arrive for a fight. Adele gets Jimmy to promise not to fight again. Will they have a happy life?

James J. Jeffries plays the referee.
