I just received this today for use on a MacBook Air (why they only give you one audio port on a laptop puzzles me). First time I tested it, it didn't work- but then I figured something out. It's more of a Macbook issue than an adapter issue.

I plugged the adapter into my MacBook with the headphone plug already plugged into it, which worked fine. Then I plugged in the microphone to the microphone jack and... nothing, it didn't work. I went into the sound settings and there was no option to configure anything to fix the issue, the only sound input that showed up was the built in mic.

I unplugged the adapter from the Macbook. The second time around, I made sure both the headphone & external mic cords were first plugged into the adapter and then plugged the adapter back into the Macbook. This time the Macbook recognized the external audio input, I selected it and it worked fine. Years ago a mic plug was a mic plug. Now they're all "smart" plugs that try and sense what you've got connected and configure themselves automatically based on what they think you need to do. As a result, you've got to make note of the order of how you plug them in.

The multi conductor nature of the male plug does make it kind of delicate & susceptible to breaking off, so I make sure to be careful when plugging and unplugging it. At $10 the price is a bit high IMO. Overall not a bad adapter.

I have a desktop headset that I wanted to use with my PS4, and I was able to do so thanks to this adapter. After plugging everything in I could listen to game audio and voice chat through the headset, and the mic worked perfectly during multiplayer games and streaming via Twitch.

Got this because I purchased a used Astro mixamp and wanted to use my Sennheiser PC 360 headset with my xbox (for audio and chat). Works just like it should, combines audio and mic support into one 3.5mm input.

I purchased this product so that I could use my gaming headset to record voice memos on my iPod Classic, use both the headset and microphone with my MacBook Pro (late 2011 model) and for my Android phone. The adapter works perfectly for all these purposes.

The problem many users face is that their devices have a single 3.5mm headphone jack that supports four-contact connectors for stereo audio and mono microphones but have headphones / speakers and microphones with individual 3.5mm connectors. Additionally, some want to record audio on such devices and use standard microphones that have normal two- or three-contact connectors (and not buy specialized microphones for individual devices). This product works for these purposes.

The only potential drawback is that, on devices like the iPod, in order to have the device recognize a microphone connected via the adapter without an accompanying output audio device, a dummy plug is needed. For example, if you connect just the microphone to the adapter and leave the headphone jack unoccupied, an iPod will not recognize the microphone.

Also, this adapter will not allow you to record stereo audio with a stereo microphone. The four-contact connector has only one contact for input and therefore supports only mono microphone input. This is not a problem or limitation of the adapter but a limitation of the four-contact combination input.

This will have an issue with iDevices, due to the fact that Apple swapped the 2 upper (ground and mic) poles on their 3.5mm connector. Based on my understanding of circuitry, I believe it will work with non-powered headsets, due to the fact that the microphone won't really care about the polarity. I, however, bought this for my long-distance girlfriend so she could use Turtle Beaches with her Mac - it failed miserably (sound worked, mic didn't) - I'm assuming because the TB chip had no clue why the Mac chip was sending a current over ground trying to detect a mic. After some research about the swapped poles, I went ahead and walked her through cutting the wires and re-splicing them with ground and mic swapped (what an adventure!) and it worked after that.

It's not really the fault of the part that Apple has swapped poles, but this company really should thoroughly test compatibility before advertising it.

I needed a breakout adapter so that I could plug an external microphone into my Droid Razr Maxx to use it like a tape recorder, and this seemed to fit the bill. When it arrived I plugged the adapter in, then plugged in the headphones and microphone. Hit record, and . . . nothing - the phone was still only picking up sound from the built-in mics. Was it the wrong adapter? Did the Droid headset jack have a different wiring?

After some research (including checking the adapter wiring with an ohmmeter) I discovered - like one of the other reviewers who has a Macbook - that you need to plug the mic and headphones into the female splitter jacks first, then insert the StarTech adapter 4-pin plug into the phone. The phone needs to detect what kind of device is plugged in before it will route the signals properly. Once I did this, I had no problem using the external mic to record with. Now my phone acts like a fairly decent digital audio recorder.

I'd have given this five stars - good build quality, no problems with audio noise - if the manufacturer had simply enclosed a note saying "plug in the adapter after you plug in the mic and earphones". A frustrating experience, but at least I learned something new about the Droid Razr internals.
