Half the fun of playing chess is all the peripherals that make up the game: the setting, the board, the pieces, the beer or wine by your side... and the Lewis Chessmen are the most beautiful and evocative pieces to be found anywhere. This version put out by the National Museums of Scotland is well worth the price you have to pay. Accept no substitutes! These are a genuine work of art, beautifully reproduced from the originals, no "plastic" feel to them at all, fantastic detail, and real heft when moving them. Worth every penny!

(Now if only I wouldn't get clobbered every time I actually play the game!)

Judging from all the other sets I've looked at, this set appears to be as close to the real thing as is available. If you can find some high resolution photos of the REAL chessmen pieces during an image search and then compare them to the reproduction pieces, you might find yourself slightly disappointed that the carving detail is somewhat LESS faith to the original pieces -- especially around the eyes -- but in other detail too. Yet, all in all, this is a very nice reproduction set, and you probably won't find better for sale to the general public.

They certainly feel like they are made of "heavy-ish" bone or walrus tooth. They could be a little heavier in my opinion, but they don't feel like cheap plastic either. They have an authentic "feel" to them.

It would be nice if you could find "absolutely authentic" pieces that are truly "faithful" to the original carved pieces, but in reality, I doubt most other folks would notice it much when you invite them over to play a game of chess. I have a feeling most folks will marvel at the look and feel of this set. I'm only picky because I'm an artist/photographer and amateur art historian who has a critical eye for detail. Nonetheless, I did have an enjoyable time photographing them on my 100 year old chessboard. (See pix attached to this review...)

Even though these pieces are slightly smaller than the original chessmen they are patterned after, you'll want a larger board than you might use for a regular chess set. These pieces have a weight and girth to them that make a normal sized board feel puny.

Don't get me wrong, over all, I am very pleased with this set. It would look dazzling in any old English library.

The Lewis Chessmen (or Uig Chessmen, named after the bay where they were found) are a group of 78 12th-century chess pieces, most of which are carved in walrus ivory. Discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, they may constitute some of the few complete, surviving medieval chess sets, although it is not clear if a set as originally made can be assembled from the pieces. They are owned and exhibited by the British Museum in London, which has 67 of the original pieces, and the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, which has 11 pieces. As a avid collector of fine chess sets from around the world and owning sets that have cost well over a $1000.00 dollars, this set is amazing, to own a part of history. The box and pieces are perfect. If you have any doubt be assured this set will amaze and delight you for years to come.

I searched long and hard for the perfect set of Lewis chessmen, and i constantly found myself returning to this exact set. The pieces come in a wonderful black box with some high-density foam to lock them into place.

Pieces themselves: No dif. in details between the 4 knights, 4 bishops, and 4 rooks besides the colors. Pawns have about 2 or 3 dif. celtic designs on them and they are very smooth and sturdy. Every piece feels evenly sanded out and there are no rough parts (I thought the king's chest would be rough due to the photo)
NOW WE TALK ABOUT THE WEIGHT!! the weight is damn near perfect! I love grabbing a handful of pawns and shaking them around in my hand. the clinky-clank noises that arise from the contact between the pieces is music to my ears.

Questions you might have that i can answer:

1)are the bishops sitting? NO but they still look awesome
2) I just don't know if they will be heavy enough?!?!: YES THEY WILL BE trust me. i'm picky.
3) Yes, You need to make your own chess board or buy one. i made one from cardboard ,tape, sharpy, and paper and it works brilliantly haha.
4) Yes they will last you a lifetime. i dropped the queen and king first time i set them up and they reacted as if they were your favorite rocks landing on the ground. (No harm done)
5) They are worth it. only 280 (including shipping) that was only 2 nights of work for me as a server. fork up the cash and you will be stoked if you can find anyone to play with.

Very happy with this purchase and I don't regret this choice one bit.

I purchased as a gift for my grandson. I read different reviews and they said don't waste your money on lesser priced. Only buy from Scotland. Museum or British Museum. The set came and it is very well made. The pieces are heavy and the detail is great. The pieces are big. This is not a miniature set. My grandson is thrilled.
