All the actors are top notch, good sound track and a great script made this an excellent film based on true events. Evil in the raw among the authorities of a town allowed the pedephiles to murder and rape for decades without fear of being caught. Absolute evil, this is a real horror film because it's based on facts.

* Mild Spoiler Alert * I'm not giving away any key parts or conclusions *

2 1/2 stars for realism and good acting.
Although it is well scripted and superbly acted, this film is not what it appears to be.
The main plot of the movie is about the corrupt officials involved in this and another case.
Not, as I thought, about the pursuit and apprehension of the Yorkshire Ripper. In fact, the Ripper case is just an afterthought.
In the beginning things are murky due to flashbacks to an earlier shooting where some policemen were shot.
There is also a side story of an affair between two of the detectives on the (Ripper) case.
Also the tragedies that both the mistress and the wife have suffered, which are not even connected.
Wish they would have stuck to main plot, it was just a little too scattered for me.
What could have easily been a 4 or 5 star movie only gets a 2 1/2.

I was somewhat confused by this story while watching it. I checked it out afterwards in wikipedia and learned that it is the 2nd of a 3 part trilogy shown on UK television. I suspect things would be a little clearer if I had seen #1 before #2. That being said this film can stand alone as a reasonably entertaining mystery. It is well acted. ("Carson" of Downtown Abbey is part of the cast). It is humorless and grim. It is apparently loosely based on real events. I would suggest tracking down the first film in this Red Riding series before watching this one. However my own reaction at this point is - it's not worth my trouble to do so.

I don't remember how I found this trilogy. It may have been when depression set in upon the end of Season 1 of True Detective. No matter, I am fortunate I did find this. Of the three versions this is a close second best. I think what made it second best is the lack of closure. Great writing, great acting, and a compelling story makes this a must watch. I haven't really thought through the ramifications of watching these out of order. I saw the first episode first because I didn't know it was a trilogy. Do yourself a favor and see the trilogy in order.
