I didn't know what exactly to expect when I made this purchase, but I am glad I did anyway. Adam Bly, founder and editor-in-chief of Seed Magazine, which I had never heard of, has put together a really fantastic book. The only thing I knew going in was that there were some really big-name intellectuals in this book; I had to know what they said. So, here is a breakdown of each chapter and subject:

1) Evolutionary Philosophy: Edward O. Wilson (Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge) and Daniel Dennett (Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon). 2) The Problems of Consciousness: Rebecca Goldstein (The Mind-Body Problem (Contemporary American Fiction)) and Steven Pinker (The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature). 3) Time: Alan Lightman and Richard Colton. 4) On Design: Drew Endy and Stefan Sagmeister. 5) Objectivity and the Image: Joan Fontcuberta and Ariel Ruiz i Altaba. 6) Climate Politcs: Laurie David and Stephen Schneider. 7) War and Deceit: Noam Chomsky (

This book is a collection of engaging conversations between pairs of scientists and leaders in arts and humanities. It presents reasoned exchanges between thought leaders of our society. Climate politics discussed between the late Steve Schneider and Laurie David, and Smater Infrastructure discussed between Tom Lovejoy and Mitchel Joachim are two among 22 topics explored in this book. I can see from this collection why Adam Bly's Seed Magazine is so successful. No wonder he is in such demand at the World Economic Forum. He is truly, a world leader. These conversations are too fascinating to miss. Science Is Culture: Conversations at the New Intersection of Science + Society

It is easy to be jealous of Adam Bly: by age 26 he was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, received a Golden Jubilee Medal from Queen Elizabeth II, and has lectured at more prestigious venues than most of us will ever attend in a lifetime. ABut this book represents why we should be grateful for his generous and genuine curiosity. Adam can wonder "what would it be like to bring together the greatest living thinkers for some one-on-one conversations about subjects they have thought about deeply?" and he can curate and publish them for all to read and discuss further. Moreover, because these are two-sided conversations, they maintain a balance in narrative, depth, and reflection that is often missed when a single author sits down alone to try to write down not only what they now understand about the universe, but what that understanding might mean. It is in shared discussion that meaning really does begin to have meaning.

From this ingenious form, then, springs genius, again and again. Fantastic!

It's a great idea (Seed's) to bring together people from different disciplines and experience and invite them to talk about issues they both care about. The issues are wide ranging but all linking science with some aspect of culture. The debates cover about 15 to 20 pages, which can be a bit frustrating when the reader wants the discussion between the two to carry on a little longer. I have already got one book (by the scientist talking about 'Who makes science?', a well known physicist and author). So an eye opener and a stimulance to read more. What else could one ask for in a book?
