I coveted these for a long time but they seemed pricey and I was worried that they'd get stolen because everything on a bike gets stolen. Not to worry about stolen: once they're on, they're ON. They're also pretty discreet when they're turned off.

Installation: bit of a bitch and the button system is a little confusing but my 11 year old figured it out right away.

I live in Vancouver where it rains constantly and I ride every day; so far they've held up. I haven't tried to change batteries yet. That looks tricky.

You have to pedal pretty fast and you seem to need two M232 panels to make that "full wheel" lighting effect shown in the promo pictures. It's a total motivator to pedal faster but I must admit I've had a few near-misses trying to catch a glimpse of my wheel in passing window reflections. You gotta be careful when you're being awesome.

So I was cycling home last night when a passing car slows down, rolls down their window, and hollers out at me as I'm trying to get my MonkeyLights spinning faster: "Thanks for the lights, man!"

Huge puff of skunky smoke billowed out at the same time. They waved and drove off. True story.

At first I thought these lights were a little pricey. Although, when I compared them to the smaller 10-light version, they didn't really cost that much more for the extra lights. I bought two. They were easy to install. There are 42 patterns (plus a monkey light logo pattern). I've added a picture to the pictures section of all the patterns and combinations available. Patterns include rainbow colors, stars, hearts, skull and cross-bones, dog paws, running man, paperdolls, flowers, fish bones, spider, elephants, lightning bolts, comets, rocket ships, aztec design, lady bugs, eye balls, flames, atomic design, and many more colorful patterns, along with a few different random settings. It also has two power settings where you can have the lights on low or high setting. This light is awesome! I gave one to my husband for his bike. We have gone out on our cruiser bikes about 3 times now at dusk or dark with the lights on. People comment on the lights, take pictures, and more! The description says that you have to go at a speed of about 10 miles per hour for the entire pattern to cover the wheel. Since we haven't biked in a long time and are just getting started (and we have one-speed cruisers), it is hard to keep this speed up. It also says you cannot go more than 40 miles an hour with these lights, so for you speed demons with with robot legs, these may not work for you. For the majority of our ride at a casual speed of less than 10 miles per hour, the pattern covers 1/4 to 1/2 of the wheel, unless we are going downhill. Still very cool! It does look like the lights have an extra plug into the battery pack for a second set of lights on the same wheel. Not sure if this would work well or if the patterns are able to synchronize.Read more ›

I've been using the original Monkeylectric lights for over a year now and am excited to now be using the new 232's. The pattern selection is bigger than the originals and you can selecet certain groups (like the classic patterns or groups of new patterns) and you can pick out goups of colors to customize your ride. I like to change the colors to reflect holidays like orange and purple for Halloween or to have different colors for each wheel. The new 232's also moved the battery from the board on the spokes to the hub of your wheel. This help reduce weight balance issues and seems to make it easier to change the batteries in some cases. It also has two quick connects for batteries this makes it a little easier to install and maye you can find a way to recharge rechargeble batteries or have a second battery pack ready to hook up. The instructions don't cover this but hoping to find more out about this.

Bottom line; These are great for your bike, They reduce your chance of being hit by cars but increase your chance of being hit on, many cars will slow down just to check you out. They take a little bit of patience and planning to install but are worth it! They are waterproof and come with a two year warranty. Use the security cable on your lights and be the life of the bike ride!

New Info: One battery pack can run two light units! This is awesome if you get two lights for one wheel. This cuts down the weight in batteries, it does reduce the run time of course but since the batteries go into a quick load housing you can have the other set from your second light on hand to swap out and it takes just seconds to swap. I bought an extra set of rechargables so that while I'm riding with one set, I can have another set charging at home and it's sweet!

Just received it yesterday, took about 15 minutes to mount it, a little tricky to connect to the hub, but the zip ties work well. Took it down to Santa Monica pier and people were smiling! Only downside is that you need to ride at 10mph or faster for full effect (still cool at low speed), which is too fast for the crowded path, but I got it for Burning Man, and it should be amazing. Love it so much I'm getting a second one for my other wheel. Well made, small USA start up, nice to buy something from them, very fast delivery.
