I have been involved in the studio art-glass movement since 1998. Worked at Jerome Baker under Saheed and Harris and have been on my own in the scene/culture since 1999. Not having met Marble Slinger personally, I was somewhat apprehensive to take my hard earned glass-dollars and contribute to another potential competitor and their Dreams. I still, after 13 years on the torch, work daily on it; and have seen too many people called "glassblowers" that either don't have the talent or don't practice it... Or on the other side - those with the talent that practice it, but want out, to do something else- maybe like making films...

Primarily because this is an important film to my industry, but further because I DO have an innate interest in art, and the reflection of it or on it by people, particularly by those native to its' culture- I decided that there was no choice when deciding whether or not to view something that has been recognized as definitive of the times/ of a movement.

M Slinger has produced an accurate and unbiased, balanced, and frankly a phenomenal documentary. Being someone who also enjoys documentaries, I can say that this left me feeling more informed, and mostly, inspired. Whether it's the progession, the filmography, or even the music, this has to be one of the most tightly produced films I have EVER seen.

Even though some of my least favorite people in the industry got some of the most time on camera, I have to admit that Slinger exercised only the best in judgement in keeping the length of these scenes; not because of the "poplarity" of individuals, or even their current pertinence to the movement; but in the greater story that is told, as there are many individuals that it has consisted of.

This is a must see movie for anyone who is curious about the glass blowing culture out west. It follows several groups of blowers (artists) through the years starting with Bob Snodgrass (the original Grateful Dead pipe blower). There's a lot of very beautiful and intricate glass pipes created and blown by some interesting artists. This movie shows how a once frowned upon practice has now developed into a true and beautiful art form with pipes that are capable of being displayed in the finest art galleries.

I rented this video and found it great--of course I am a bit biased because of the founders of this west coast art scene is my son--but it is well done and great to see the art work of the many artists in this genre--some great young talent out there. Enjoyed the interviews with the many artists. If you like glass art--rent or buy this video--it is great and I liked the fact so many artists were interviewed and their art shown.

This single handedly got me interested in the art of glassblowing. I'd highly recommend it to anyone that smokes or enjoys glassblowing. The documentary really displays the art of glassblowing as an underground movement, which I ceased to even realize. Since watching it, I've taken up glassblowing classes and made a few pipes of my own!

I have been mesmerized by glass blowing since i saw a PBS special on Dale Chihuly in the early 90's.
Really enjoyed this documentary. I have probably watched this film at least 5 times in the last year. Great soundtrack too.
