This starts with the Roman Empire's expansion into northern Europe. Once Rome has fallen, it really skims the top of European events as they involve what became Germany. It is sort of a "Headlines of Medieval Germany." Many individuals and events are referenced by name, but exactly who/what they are is not explained. If you have no background in European history, much of the references will go over your head. But...the book is well enough written and it gives you a definite sense of the times and the socio-political evolution from the fall of Rome to the Renaissance. I am presently at 93% and certainly will finish the book, but it is becoming somewhat tiresome. I want the information, but the writing does not draw me along to the next page. If you want detail, read a multi-volume history; if you just want a general sense of the Middle Ages in Europe (e.g. the Holy Roman Empire, Italy, France, Germany) then this will fill the bill.

Being of German ancestry and having visited Germany last year, this book was very enlightening. Getting some history on some of the regions I visited and some from the area my family is from was, for me very intriguing. We took a boat trip down the Rhine and saw some of the very places written about in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in visiting the Rhineland.

The book gives a very fun perspective on the Middle Ages in Germany. The level of detail is really great for the average reader to learn something about Germany but not too detail so that you get really lost in the details. I would recommend it.

This is classic "great man" history, focusing mainly on emperors and popes. Given my general lack of any knowledge about early medieval Germany, though, it served as an excellent overview. Prof. Henderson is a very engaging writer whose personality shows through. And, given when it was written, there were very few places where he seemed out of touch with modern sensibilities. Of course, there has been an enormous amount of research done since this was written, but as a (free) introduction, it was more than worth the time. My only complaint is that, I suppose following late 19th century usage, he referred to certain cities by their French rather than German names. I was halfway through before I realized that Mayence was Mainz. But then, maybe I'm just slow.

A great primer on how Europe formed. References to further books on a fascinating struggle on how we govern ourselves and nations.

I was uninformed about ALL this history, and found it so fascinating. Until the last few chapters, when it seemed to be Italian and papal history, reading was easy and kept my attention.
I recommend it to yearners of historical details of humanity developing. From warring tribes, I imagine in animal hides, to fine silken robes and traveling minstrals, centuries of changes.

Nicely done. Interesting writing style, even for the 1800's.

Very extensive on detail. A reference to be reckoned with. I liked the stile of writing. I would recommend it to persons interested in European culture, history, literature in general.
