A touching story; beautifully developed characters; well written and directed. You do not have to be a fan of movies from Israel to love this movie.

I really enjoyed this imaginatively quirky but also quite resonant film by renowned Israeli writer-director Avi Nesher called the 'Matchmaker'

It is a highly-entertaining but also quite insightful tale, populated by a truly colorful & highly engaging cast of quirky but charismatic characters!

Telling a coming-of-age story about Arik (Tuval Shafir), taking place in the summer of 1968 Haifa, Israel = who receives pricelessly practical (but also intriguingly insightful) lessons (regarding "Life" + literature ++ Romance, et al), becoming something of an apprentice to the mysterious 'Yankele Bride' (the eponymous 'Matchmaker' played by Adir Miller).

On the surface, 'Yankele' appears to be quite sincere about his 'mission' to find perfect romantic 'matches' ==> specifically helping the lonely and forlorn of society, who have not been favored by fortune = requiring Yankele's extra-special perceptive skills & abilities at locating perfect 'soul-mates'!!

However, Yankele himself can be counted among the 'lonely' =only finding prospective mates for everyone-else but himself?! He does lavish particular attentions on Clara Epstein (portrayed by the wistful Maya Dagan) - but something about Clara's secretly-tragic past prevents them from consummating their genuinely mutual-affections.

This film does not dwell on specifics but it appears that Clara carries profound guilt about being a Holocaust survivor, as ghosts from her past mercilessly haunt/interfere with her present. This seems to be a running theme within the movie = i.e.

Excellent. Combines a coming of age story with Holocaust memories that defined the first generation of Israelis. Highly recommended film.

Some films entertain; some films introduce the viewer to a new culture. For me, The Matchmaker, did both. Directed by Avi Nesher, The Matchmaker is a charming story of a teenager living in Haifa, who goes to work as a "spy-boy", for a local matchmaker (played by Adir Miller.) Arik's new job requires him to explore the low rent district of Haifa and its inhabitants. Along the way, he learns a lot about humanity: both our capacity to love and to do to harm to others. The story is very entertaining in its own right but if you are unfamiliar with modern day Israel as I am (relatively modern--the majority of the action takes place in the sixties,) I think you will find the viewing experience doubly rewarding. This is a rich and rewarding story of a young man given the job of learning about others. We are all the better for it by the end of the film. Highly recommended.
