This film is definitely dated and often funny when it is not meant to be so. It begins with the opening scene of a husband and wife arguing. The acting is so over the top and histrionic, I found myself laughing, even though it clearly is not supposed to be a comedic scene. It sets the stage for the murder that follows.

What follows is vintage Hitchcock. When an innocent man is charged with the strangulation murder of a woman, fate brings him in contact with the daughter of the Chief Constable. While on the run from the police, they chance to meet again under unusual circumstances. Believing in his innocence and feeling the stirrings of love, she helps him in his quest to exonerate himself for a crime he did not commit.

Based upon the Josephine Tey novel, "A Shilling for Candles", the film is not a whodunit, as the viewer knows pretty much from the beginning who the murderer is. The only question is whether our young couple will discover him before it is too late. The film, overall, has its moments. The scene in the mineshaft is harrowing. The band at the hotel playing in blackface is a bit of a throwback. Still, it is not one of Hitchcock's better film, though fans of his will derive a modicum of enjoyment from viewing it.

It aged well. Its plot seems predictable but that's because it has devices that became standard later on - the innocent man who has to prove his own innocence while eluding the police, who are disinterested in investigating the crime since it's easier to stick with the one suspect; the young beauty who completely distrusts him at first but then comes to believe and aid him in his quest; love blossoms, though in a most discreet way, with a couple of scenes risqué for the era that surprisingly snuck past the censors; several skin of the teeth escapes; comic relief sprinkled throughout. Overall, an enjoyable movie. The only downside was a somewhat flaky video stream.

An early Hitchcock sound film from the period before he came to the US. It has one of the favorite themes from later films: the man wrongly accused (we think) and the conflicted woman trying to help him. Any Hitchcock fan would be fascinated.

A young writer laughs at the murder charge against him because he knows he's innocent. We know he's innocent, too. A very nice early Hitchcock. Hitch fans who look for him putting himself in the scene will spot him as a bystander holding a camera outside the courtroom door.

Just watched this movie for the umpteen time. I love this movie, even thought others may find it somewhat dated. It is suppose to be a minor Hitchcock, but the growing love affair between Nova Pilbeam and Derrick De Marney is skillfully acted and filmed, making the film worth watching. (Note: The quick shot of the seagulls is an indication of a movie to come.)

This is one of my favorite early Hitchcock films. It may not be as well known as his early British classics but this little flick is just plain fun. The two young leads are terrific to watch and keep you enticed thru the whole movie. The "bobbies" don't come off too well but it's all done in a light-hearted spirit . I have an old set of early Hitchcock films and "Young and Innocent" is included. They're ok for what they cost. The whole set was $5.00. However, super clarity isn't the set's strong point. Yet, I still liked this film immensely. Seeing it in HD is just BETTER!

This early Hitchcock film, made while he lived and worked in England, shows his keen sense of humor combined with his ability to build suspense or develop a sequence of action scenes with a bit of wit. Certainly this film is about a murder of a screen star and the ridiculous charges of murder against the screen writer who discovers her body and then runs for help. However, it is actually a romantic comedy full of inept Dickinsonian English characters. The police are totally incompetent and hard headed which works to the advantage and disadvantage of the wrongfully charged screen writer. The lawyers are equally incompetent and whereas the screen writer is amused by his befuddled court appointed lawyer, he realizes that he best rely on his own resources than those afforded him by the court. It is to the accused man’s advantage that the young and beautiful daughter of the constable falls for him and is convinced of his innocence. However this leads to wild police chases between speeding trains and the swallowing of a car down a deserted mine shaft. The children in the film, especially the constable’s youngest son, add delightful comments during family meals. To prove his innocence the screenwriter and constable’s daughter must partner with a homeless chap who again adds humor with his commentary around the upper-class world in which the constable and his daughter reside. The final scenes are pure Hitchcock, full of suspense and split second timing, spiced with a bit of humor, but fully resolving the dilemma of all parties in the end. It is a sweetly entertaining film.
