This is a movie where kids are the heroes and save the day dealing with dimwitted kidnappers (or dadnappers) who are around the intelligence level of the two criminals from Home Alone. The basic plot is that Melissa's, a young teen's father is the writer of the biggest latest fad series of James Bond/Macgyver style action hero books with a teen character that every kid wants to be. Of course Melissa hates that character who gloats to her and taunts her in her mind, which makes her look a bit insane as she tells of air in the company of others. She also feels her dad doesn't love her as much as his literature creation so is thrilled to be going on a camping trip, not so thrilled that for some reason her father is bringing a life size cardboard cutout of the actor from the book's cover images dressed as the character. Even less thrilled when he mentions they'll be stopping for a night at some small town hotel so he can judge some fan convention contest revolving around his character. Of course the movie wouldn't be called Dadnapped if some of those attendees didn't have plans to kidnap her father. But Melissa isn't going to let kidnappers take her father away from her one one planned time with him.

The movie is watchable but is of the quality of the half hour Saturday morning kids' shows, it has the same fake very clean looking sets, at no time do you ever believe anyone is ever in any danger from the kidnappers, and the characters are very similar to kid characters on these sorts of shows too. There's a lot of throwing messy stuff at adults. Leaving clues that she knows fans of the book (other kids) will pick up on to follow them (rather than the more logical simply writing we're at...).
