I was debating whether to watch Season 3 because my favorite characters got killed off in Season 2. But now, after finishing the last episode of Season 4, I think I liked Season 3 & 4 more than Season 1 & 2. The reason is that Richard Harrow becomes a more fully developed character and he truly comes into his own. In other words, he becomes a certified badass. There is a tremendous payoff in the final episodes of Season 4. The other interesting storyline is that weirdo Van Alden (the religious guy who whipped himself for lusting after Margaret) also develops into a three-dimensional character. And finally, Al Capone grows up - maturing from a low-level gangster playing grabass to one who exercises judgment and self control. When Capone tries to teach his deaf son how to stand up to bullies it is heartbreaking. I watch a lot of gangster films and there has never been a gangster like Nucky Thompson in popular fiction. He is a frail-looking geek who came to power through the exercise of social intelligence, political scheming and cunning. It is fascinating to watch a criminal who is highly intelligent, intuitive and political. After I watched the final episode of Season 4, I found myself thinking about the character of Richard Harrow for several days. It affected me. It's fiction and they're not real people and yet you somehow want them to be happy. I guess that's a testament to the powerful writing behind these two seasons.

I would have liked to see more character development and further involvement in the series before killing off what I would consider one of the most interesting characters of the show and his wife. Shock and surprise in this instance (season finale) was a negative for me and I thought the writers could have done better, this is the type of writing that makes one wonder who departs next and if one should even bother taking an interest. All in all a great series though, but the producers will have to dig deep to produce interesting replacements without ending up being a run of the mill product, don't see what is left carrying this series....as you can tell, I'm not a big fan of killing off main characters to twist the audience.

Okay, okay, you want a review. In the beginning, that is season 1, I was challenged to suspend disbelief, to overlook flaws in period representation. In the beginning I was annoyed at the fact that after being in the sea, the labels were still firmly attached to the liquor bottles being washed on the shore in the opening. Not to mention the music. In the beginning every character was just plain bad. In the beginning the sex and violence and violent sex disgusted me. But then, I fell in love. I fell in love with Nucky, Jimmy, Richard.I hated other characters even more passionately I paid for season two. I paid for season three. I am addicted.
It makes me question everything I thought I knew about good and evil.
Never mind all that, it is a television series, that's all. It is supposed to entertain by transporting you to a totally different reality, and that is what it does. It isn't art, it is entertainment, and that is good enough.

Boardwalk empire is the best show out right now. It's a tapestry of fascinating scenes, characters, and places that are real enough to make you believe that a version of these events happened. Steve Buscemi gives a wonderfully restrained performance in a truly ensemble show. Jack Huston as Richard Harrow deserves to win all the awards. Best watched 3 at a time to make you get into the 20's swing of things. And I can't leave out Michael Williams as Chalky White... He plays Chalky with such a deep undercurrent of anger and makes you understand what it feels like to be an outsider wherever you go. Can't wait for season 4 to be available on Amazon Instant. Every subplot pays off.

I love this series! It is hard for me to find an adult show that doesn't contain a rape scene in it, and this one doesn't. I can enjoy this series simple based off of that one fact. I don't understand the reason why tv shows find it alright to display such horrible things and call it "entertainment."

The story continues but there is much less suspense and intrigue from Season 1 and 2. The story relies much more on just violence with this season which almost become routine with this season

I have fallen in love with this series... It was so well done with following each character through these hard and different way of life during that era. I thought the director did so well to let the audience get to know each character., where they fit dynamically in the story as it rolls on... Season 1 it did fantastic.... got a little choppy in Season 2, but they left you with brilliant "cliff hanger" at the end of Season 2 !!!! I was eager to watch Season 3. Saddly enough the choppy, quickly thrown together scenes., that left out huge parts of characters lives., etc., had worsened. It was like they were just trying to end the series., and quickly... But Season 1 was and two, were worth it... (:

Poor Nucky. Lucky ex-fed guy. Harrow is big screen awesome. Writing for all this and other series dramas is odd, and often illogical. Why they didn't arm to the teeth and ride up to obliterate Gyp Rosetti after the first offense makes no sense. But, that would have let the wind outta the sails for the rest of the season. Why AR didn't ally w Nucky after attempted assassinations just doesn't make good "business" or any other kind of sense. I guess it is about time for him to go according to actual history, but I'd hadta go read up on it.
