Have not really gotten into this. Author unlike writer of Company Commander tends to blame most problems on civilian officials. Of cores he is a battalion commander and the other officer is a Major and a company commander different responsibilities, different perspective. May change my opinion after further reading.

Very good and well written. This is a first hand account of feeling what these British soldiers, whom are very well trained but underpaid, under supplied and under supported in their day in and day out, fighting on the front against the Taliban.
This account is a real eye opener of how much these guys sacrifice along with the small gratitude they recieve when returning home needing care and support. These guys are all heros and need be treated to highest standards of care when injured and deserve much better pay for their hardships.

Having read a fair few accounts from a soldier’s perspective, it was interesting to read it from the point of view of a commander. His frustration and guilt at not always being able to join his men on the front line and also at the seemingly ceaseless combat against the Taliban is evident. He is quite outspoken about their treatment when they come home, but he deals with the issues sensitively, from his experiences, in a considered way. The pride he feels for those under his command is clear throughout. A well balanced book offering a different perspective of the war and the burden of command.

This is a gripping and moving account offering a true insight into what the soldiers faced in Afghanistan, which would be of interest to both US and UK soldiers and readers alike. At times the book reads like an action thriller, with incredibly tense scenes of combat, which keep you turning the pages. The book is also reflective, dwelling on the treatment of soldiers whilst on duty and when they come home exploring with great care the hardships these men face. Intelligently written, this by far exceeds other accounts of the conflict and, at point, moves you to tears. An inspirational account from a true leader.
