An interesting history worth the read. Comprehensive and thorough. However, you must overcome the writing style. The sentences are overly long and somewhat tortuous. The amount of commas used could stretch the length of Charlemagne's empire. Still, it's an oft neglected period of history filling the gap between the Merovingians to the chaos after the Carolingians.
