BONE JARRING, AXE SMASHING SHOW THAT IS ALSO FIERCELY INTELLIGENT, HIGHLY COMPLEX AND VERY WELL WRITTEN.

(I will not mention spoilers) Season two follows the rising stock of central character Ragnar. We already know from season one about the conflict of aspirations between Ragnar and his brother Rollo. We get right into it as Rollo's alliance with Jarl Borg brings him into direct conflict with his brother. Ragnar also pursues his vision of exploiting new areas to the west in Britain, while convincing King Horik of the mutual benefits. Ragnar proves his intellect in pursuing multiple strategies of conquest, negotiation and alliance - rather than just bloodshed. Not everyone is on board though. However, as Ragnar spends extended time abroad, threats arise at home. Multiple fronts are opened and Ragnar's clan is challenged for their very existence. Many characters that we absolutely love (like Lagertha, Athelstan, and Floki) have jaw dropping developments. We also find that Ragnar's successes are beginning to draw concern and envy of those in power.

For those not familiar with this show yet, it is some of the best written and most dramatic offering on TV, full stop! Those who are not even into history or Vikings have been rabidly drawn into this show. It's just that compelling. It is violent, so if that is not for you, it's best to pass on it. However, History Channel has done an amazing job of weaving true events and both legendary and real characters into a masterpiece of historical fiction. This period of Viking history is pretty well represented in the show as well. The character development is some of the strongest you will see, even in cinema. In fact, the production values in general are equal to top notch cinema.

I love this series. I am a history lover and the Vikings have long fascinated me. When the series first came out I thought it would be a bit more "scholarly". When I watched it I was blown away! I was somewhat unfamiliar with many of the actors who do an outstanding job in the series. If you believe history to be boring or tedious, you have not tuned into this show. It delivers all the bloody action you would expect to see along with the drama of a complicated home life. Ragnar is the leader, some may say a bit of a sociopath. His wife, Lagertha, from season 1, a strong woman, has left him due to baby mama drama!! Who expected this? But that is not the only bit of drama and intrigue. We have Rollo, Ragnar's brother, and his decision to fight against Ragnar. Then there is Siggy, the wife of the Earl Ragnar killed, who now has formed an alliance with Rollo and was friends with Lagertha. Then there is the drama that accompanies invading lands with all the bloody action. Mixed in with all this is the religious aspect. The show explores the peoples beliefs and allows us to explore too. I think that may be my favorite part of the show. It does not flinch away from brutality in the name of the Gods, nor do the people understand everything the God's do. The show has beautiful scenery that mingles with a somewhat simple looking set that depicts, in my opinion, an actual Norse village at the time. I believe the History Channel has done an outstanding job depicting the life of the Vikings and Ragnar, (who is a real person - look him up if you don't know of him). Season 1 was excellent and season 2 has started off strongly as improved upon. Well done History Channel!
That said, let me state that those who are easily offended may have issues with the show.

History Channel's Vikings follows the legendary Ragnar Lothbrok. I hate spoilers so I am going to try very hard not to give much away here.

Travis Fimmel's portrayal of Ragnar has blown me away. He can be so very bold ,brave and lethal. Sometimes he gets the "crazy twitch" in his eye. The one that either leads to chaos or victory. Of course we can't forget his romantic side either. Given all of his alleged sons in literature, it is fair to say he was somewhat of a ladies man. Fimmel plays that up well too.

The story of Lagertha is my favorite. Though her story is not only of Ragnar, it is intertwined in some places. You will see her here played by Katheryn Winnick. She has, IMHO, excelled at showing Lagertha's strength, honor and pride.

Some of the scenes can be a little graphic. Most of it during the battles and such. I don't find it too horrific but others may.

The script is sprinkled with all kinds of myths and legends. I find myself looking stuff up after every episode. Trying to find out what it means, how it is linked and what could be next. I like that I can look it up online and better understand what's going on.

Kudos to the History Channel and MGM for giving us a major, female character in Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) who wasn't written off after the somewhat disappointing events beginning season two, whose strength isn't dependent on her male counterparts and whose dignity and courage rivals that of the central hero Ragnar.

Besides being an exceptional historical drama, "Vikings Season 2" continues to engage both curiosity and imagination by defying predictability in either its character or story development and although we are given some foreshadowing in season one, it's impossible to say with certainty what'll happen along the way. It's also worth mentioning that this series possesses some of the most well-choreographed battles (whether group of solo) I've watched either in television or film in recent years as well as an almost unprecedented treatment of the religious beliefs of the cultures being represented both sympathetically and within an historical context.

I raise a flagon of mead to this well-written and mature drama that doesn't rely on "adult" situations or language to engender an atmosphere of uncompromising realism and that brings a welcome spotlight on a less than glamorous but equally fascinating period in European history. :o)
