“The Interview” is an extremely ridiculous movie, but if you’re a fan of either Seth Rogen or James Franco, you probably knew that going in. It’s a raunchy, foul-mouthed comedy with an unstoppable energy that requires the audience to be on board or off. And people that enjoy this new brand of hilarity - myself included - will have a lot of fun with it. It’s just a matter of accepting and reveling in the absurdity.

The plot itself is absolutely ludicrous (but in all the best ways), centered around a flamboyant talk show host and his loyal producer who are granted an exclusive interview with Kim Jong-un. But, there’s a catch. The CIA wants them to “take him out”. Not for drinks, not to dinner, and certainly not to party. So, these two have no choice but to attempt to assassinate the leader of North Korea. Yeah, it gets a bit crazy.

The humor is obviously akin to the kind-of stuff in “This is the End” and “Neighbors”, so if you weren’t a fan, you’re probably not going to like this. And as it goes on, it becomes increasingly silly and preposterous. But that’s precisely why I got such a kick out of it. It’s refreshing to see a movie that isn’t afraid to ‘go there’ and even be willing to step on another country’s toes to do so. But don’t get me wrong, this isn’t an offensive movie. For anyone who found this even remotely disrespectful - especially considering the ridiculous lengths this movie goes - doesn’t understand the satire. This isn’t a modern comedic masterpiece, but it’s throughly entertaining and comes highly recommended. Rogen and Franco are pitch-perfect.

I don't know who all the reviewers on Rotton Tomatoes were or why they were bashing this as a "bad movie" but what were they expecting? Lincoln?

Its a comedy. A slapstick silly campy romp movie that we all LOVE on a Saturday afternoon. Like Derek Zoolander or Sex Tape. Just silly nonsensical comedy with a touch of irony tossed in for good measure. This is what I'm looking for with a comedy, not something I have to think about too hard. I watch highbrow stuff. But that doesn't mean I bash the lowbrow if its good. And this was good. In fact it was laugh out loud funny, I laughed so hard a few times I had to back it up to see what they were saying that I'd missed while laughing.

James Franco is not my favorite actor by a long shot. He ruined "Flyboys" (as if that movie needed ruining) so as a serious actor I haven't been too much a fan, but as a comedy actor? He's HILARIOUS! In this he's actually the funny one. Seth Rogan plays the straight guy. Franco is the nut in this, and he's BRILLIANT as it. Every line made me crack up so hard I couldn't stand it. Like when he's talking to the beautiful CIA lady and says "no more Kim" and draws his finger across his throat in the throat cut symbol, lol. It was the funniest thing ever.

So anyway for my two cents worth I say get it, watch it, in fact buy it. I wished I had now. I rented and now have to wait to see it again unless I want to pay. So I should have just bought it but I listened to all the hype from the "high brow reviewer" crowd and decided to rent to be safe. Now I wish I had bought it because I could watch it again today. In fact, the day I rented it, I watched it THREE TIMES BACK TO BACK. lol. James Franco has found his game in comedy. That's where he shines. He carry's this movie all the way to North Korea and back home. I loved it.

"The Interview" (2014 release; 112 min.) brings the story of how an entertainment reporter Dave Skylark (played by James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (played by Seth Rogen) get an opportunity to interview Kim Jong-un. the "Supreme Leader" of North Korea. As the movie opens, we see a young girl (maybe 7 or 8) sing a patriotic song for North Korean officials. The song turns hilariously into an anti-America rant. Soon thereafter, we see Skylark interview Eminem (another hilarious scene). When Skylark and Rapoport find out that Jng-un is a big fan of the show, they manage an invite to North Korea. The CIA then pays a visit and convinces the guys that they need to "take out" Jong-un. At this point we're barely 20 min. into the movie but to tell you more would spoil your viewing experience.

Couple of comments: at this point as much needs to be said about the events surrounding the limited release of the movie as about the movie itself. Let's start with the movie itself: first and foremost, I had heard and read mixed things about the movie, so when my (grown) kids and I went to see it on Christmas day, I had pretty low expectations. Turns out the movie is actually not nearly as bad as I had been led the believe. Yes, there is stupid "potty" humor and yes, it's all very much over the top. But there are zingers left and right that will have you smile if not laugh out loud. One of the many, many examples: when Jong-un and Skylark are taking a tour of Jong-un's place, at some point they come across a huge tank. Comments Jong-un: "That was a gift to my grandfather by Stalin". Replies Skylark: "in our country, we pronounce that Stallone", ha! And on and on. Randall Park as Kim Jong-un is outstanding.
