La Rabida Children's Hospital, Attn: Child Life Department, 6501 S. Promontory Drive, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, United States
La Rabida is a resource upon which Chicago's families have depended -- and the world's kindhearted have supported -- since 1896.
Our history is a story of giving. La Rabida was born of the generosity of the government of Spain and a group of dedicated volunteers, a legacy that continues to the present day.
Our mission to provide care to children with lifelong medical conditions regardless of their family's ability to pay has been unwavering.
Today, La Rabida serves approximately 9,000 children annually who require primary and specialty care to address complex and challenging medical conditions. Services and programs include treatment for chronic illnesses such asthma, diabetes, and sickle cell disease, and developmental disabilities. In addition, La Rabida specializes in the treatment of children who have been abused, neglected or experienced trauma.
Under one roof, La Rabida offers access to board-certified pediatricians and specialty physicians, behavioral science professionals, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists, dietitians, case managers and social workers. All have dedicated their careers to pediatric health care and are committed to our philosophy of care.
Our inpatient unit, the S.S. La Rabida, serves patients with chronic illnesses who are experiencing a critical episode, as well as those in need of rehabilitation after surgery, burns, brain injury, stroke, or suffering trauma.
La Rabida also offers expert care to children who are dependent on technology, such as ventilators or tracheostomies or who receive nutrition intavaneously, as well as those who are transitioning from a neonatal intensive care unit or pediatric ICU at another hospital.
As a specialty hospital for extended acute care, we serve patients who need hospitalization for weeks, months, and in some cases even longer. La Rabida Children's Hospital combines the specialized expertise of a large hospital with the personalized, patient-focused attention of a smaller facility. As a long-term acute care hospital, we are also the most appropriate setting for the chronically ill or seriously injured patient with special needs because we offer a range of services through coordinated and focused care teams.
