Early Homeschool Curriculum Ideas

A Listmania! list by Lynda
The list author says: "I have so many younger moms ask me "What curriculum did you use when your kids were younger?" I decided that, rather than answering that question rather badly over and over again, I'd come up with a list of what we did! Here's the result!

I am a Christian, and one of the reasons we homeschool is to instill our faith and values in our children. However, I have found that not all curriculum that purports to be "Christian" is quality educational material, and conversely, lots of material that is not overtly Christian is really very good. Some of these resources are from a Christian perspective and others are not. You have to teach your kids to evaluate worldviews at some point anyway, right? So talk about differences as they arise.

Different kids naturally respond to different curriculums and ways of teaching. Not everything here works for every kid. However, all three of mine responded well to most of these items. And they've all gone on to succeed academically. They're now in 12th, 8th and 6th grades."
The Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling (3rd Edition)
1.  The Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling (3rd Edition) by Debra Bell
The list author says:
"This is the book I read when I was deciding whether homeschooling was for us or not.  Bell gives a terrific overview of the different philosophies of homeschooling, and she reviews specific curriculum, too.  I used this to get started, and then i went back to it for more ideas when my kids got to high school level."

The list author says:
"This guide does a lot of the work of sifting through homeschool curriculum for you.

This book could save you from a lot of costly curriculum mistakes.  I particularly like her introduction, which explains why a "one size fits all" curriculum (e.g. Abeka, Bob Jones) isn't much better than sending your child off the a "one size fits all" school."

"We used this series of 6 workbooks (see others that follow the Orange Book) as match for grades 1 through 3.  I chose them because they are more "hands-on" than many other texts, and they also introduce topics in a more logical sequence.

After your child has finished with these workbooks, he/she will be ready for Saxon Math 5/4."
