Top Comic Books

Sigismundo Celine
The list author says: "Whether you are just getting interested in comic books or are a long time reader, make sure to check out some of the ones on this list. It is a great time to be getting into comic books, the writing is the best it has every been, the art is amazing and there are cartoons, movies and television shows that are inspired by or based off of comic books.

Comic books can be difficult to get into, there are so many out there and you almost have to start at the beginning of a series to really understand it. This list should give you a good start on the classics as well as some of my favorites and also some new ones to check out. I've listed just the first volumes of some which have multiple books out.

Also, most of these are for adults and would not be good for young children."
Watchmen (Absolute Edition)
Watchmen (Absolute Edition)
"The classic.  This book redefined the view that comic books are just for little kids.  It is a story that could only be done as a comic book. However, the movie was amazing."
Absolute Dark Knight
Absolute Dark Knight
"See Batman come out of retirement to battle for Gotham.  Dark and violent this is not one for the kids."
Absolute V for Vendetta
Absolute V for Vendetta
"The movie was amazing, but the book is just as powerful.  Terrorists attack and tear Britain apart, so a new tyrannical government takes over and turns England into a police state.  The movie is like an updated version that fits closer to the issues of today, while the book is more a sign of the times in the 80's.  However, some of the concepts are universal and timeless."
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 1
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 1
"This book will take you back in time.  Legends of the past came together to fight evil and save England from her enemies. Highly detailed, this book requires a keen eye and a knowledge of 19th century literary characters to pick out everything Alan Moore hides in this book.  This book shows you what is possible with comics, similar to the Watchman where the medium is perfect for this story."
Absolute Kingdom Come
Absolute Kingdom Come
"Powerful story with beautiful art.  The classic heroes retire but the ones that fill their shoes aren't up to it.  Great statement on the future of humanity."
Transmetropolitan, Vol. 1: Back on the Street
Transmetropolitan, Vol. 1: Back on the Street
"Spider Jerusalem is a reporter who will fight corruption and any person who gets in his way.  Partially inspired by the legend of Hunter S. Thompson this book is set in the future and is both hilarious, outrageous and journalism."
Superman: Red Son (Deluxe Edition)
Superman: Red Son (Deluxe Edition)
"I am a huge Superman fan.  This is a retelling of the same old Superman story but with a twist.  Superman's rocket lands in Soviet Russia and he becomes a great Soviet hero instead of an American one."
Planetary VOL 01: All Over the World and Other Stories
Planetary VOL 01: All Over the World and Other Stories
"The Planetary organization investigates the unknown.  What starts out as a story about the team investigating the paranormal turns into an epic story where people aren't who they seem to be and there is more going on than first appears."
Absolute Justice
Absolute Justice

100 Bullets Vol. 1: First Shot, Last Call
100 Bullets Vol. 1: First Shot, Last Call
"The crime story.  As Warren Ellis put it, "Death, power, sex, money, secrets and bullets: these are the only things worth talking about."  Similar to Planetary, where the actual story is not revealed until much later."
The Losers (Book One)
The Losers (Book One)
"he Blockbuster.  This book feels like an action movie.  Full of hardcore characters, violence and take no prisoners action, this is one to get if you are looking for something that is a little bit lighter than Watchmen or DKR."
Force of Nature (StormWatch, Vol. 1)
Force of Nature (StormWatch, Vol. 1)
"A superhuman team of heroes orbit the Earth.  This is the prequel to the Authority series. "Think for Yourself and Question Authority" should be the motto for the human race.  Ellis is an ambitious writer who shows us what is possible rather than what is."
Global Frequency: Planet Ablaze
Global Frequency: Planet Ablaze

Justice League International, Vol. 1
"The 1980's were a more fun time!  The humor and fun hasn't been duplicated for me in any other comic.  I love Blue Beetle and Booster Gold so I can't help but love this series.  It is a blast to read and I love the Funny Faces."

Fables: The Deluxe Edition Book One

"Fairy Tale Characters get kicked out of their homeworld by the mysterious Adversary.  They transplant to New York and start a new life hiding among the mundane people in our world.  The story is fun, art is great and Bill Willingham knows his material. The story is funny and it's biggest impact on me was reminding me to live an adventurous life everyday."
New Teen Titans, The - Archives, Vol. 1 (New Teen Titans Archives)
