Listen To The Righteous Brothers: Bobby Hatfield & Bill Medley

Michael King "Mike"
The list author says: "Bill Medley was born on September 19, 1940 in Santa Ana, California. Bobby Hatfield was born on August 10, 1940 in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. In 1961, Bill Medley sang with his group the Paramours, while Bobby Hatfield sang with the Variations. After singing together one night in 1962, Bill Medley (deep baritone), and Bobby Hatfield (high tenor and falsetto), decided to perform as a duo. Even though they weren't related, they called themselves the Righteous Brothers. The Righteous Brothers recorded several R&B songs, including "Ko Ko Joe" and "Little Latin Lupe Lu," on the Moonglow label, from 1962 to mid-1964. The Righteous Brothers then switched to Phil Spector's Philles label. They had a number one hit in 1964 with "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," which was produced by Phil Spector, and written by Phil Spector, Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil.

The Righteous Brothers had three more major hits in 1965 on Spector's Philles label: "Just Once In My Life" (#9 in 1965), "Unchained Melody" (#4 in 1965), and "Ebb Tide" (#5 in 1965). Those songs employed Phil Spector's famous wall-of-sound production. By 1966, the Righteous Brothers left the Philles label for a lucrative deal with the Verve record label. The duo had another number one hit with their first Verve recording in 1966, "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration." However, they never came close to duplicating that success during the rest of their tenure at Verve. In 1968, Bill Medley left for a solo career. Bobby Hatfield kept the Righteous Brothers going with singer Jimmy Walker, who had been in the Knickerbockers. In 1974, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield reunited, and had a big hit with the song "Rock And Roll Heaven." The Righteous Brothers continued to tour over the years, up until Bobby Hatfield's untimely death on November 5, 2003. The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003."
