Slavery and classical Islam
The Koran gives extinsive laws regarding slavery. Thus any investigation of the role of Slavery in Islam must begin with Islam's guiding text. This is the most accessible verson of the Koran, presented in its proper manner.
The Koran Interpreted: A Translation
A good comparison for the slave laws in islam is the old Testament, what Jews call the Tanakh. This is by far the best new translation.
JPS Hebrew-English Tanakh: Pocket Edition
Then one must try to understand the role of slavery in classical Islam, as it was practiced between 632 and the 1100s. The document desribing the slave revolt in Iraq will give insights into the lives of slaves and their fate.

The Slavery of North Africa
Here we have some books on slavery in North africa, descriptions by adventurers who first came across the slave caravans crossing the sahara and such things. This is a tale of tragedy in which slave caravans set out with 9000 slaves and left half of them dead along the way.

The African Slave trade
Paul Theroux speaks briefly of Zanzibar in his travel diary of Africa
Dark Star Safari: Overland from Cairo to Capetown
Empire is about the British empire, but a chapter deals with the british trying to end the slave trade in East Africa.
Empire: The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for Global Power
This africa travel guide shows how the west and the aplogists try to make African slave trade 'exotic' and dehumanize the slaves by saying such things as "he had 12000 slave girls with him when he entered mecca" as ift he western writer is somehow thinking it funny and wonderful the enslavement of african women. But nevertheless here we see the aologist hard at work trying to make East African slavery seem acceptable while condemning the slave trade in west africa(which was destined for the americas). THe only lesson here is that one should realize slavery in all forms is a wrongful disgusting practice.
Lonely Planet Africa on a Shoestring
Zanzibar was the main station for Arabic slave raiding into east africa. The population opposite the small Arab colony was depopulated and slave raiders were soon going as far as the congo to find slaves.

Zanzibar: Slavery and the royal navy
North Africa, two main slave routes existed in transporting slaves to the Islamic empire. One went by land from Zanzibar n East Africa. One went across the Sahara. One can see the subsequent Muslim conversions took place among tribes in northern africa bordering the safar, and in east africa along the coast as far south as Tanzania.

The slave armies
Jannisaries, Moors and Mamlukes made up many of the slave armies of the middle east. Circassians also. These were usually kidnapped europeans, taken at birth to Turkey and trained as warriors. They soon came to dominate Egypt and Turkey. The Moors were Afrcan slaves used alongside Berbers to conquer Spain in the 7th century.

Some recent good scholarship
Women & Slavery in Africa (Social History of Africa) A fascinating look at women enslaved. Most important is the narrative of a young girl enslaved by Arab slavers from Zanzibar. Her mother is left to die on the road and she is buried alive, thus taking the viel off the preposterous idea that Slavery in Islam was a wonderful paradise of equality and diversity.
