A good book to begin with is Lasker's Manual of Chess. The first chapter will explain the rules and some simple mating paterns, which you could skip if they're too hard. You can save the later chapters for when you're a bit better although they are not too hard. Another great beginner book is Tarrasch's classic, in my opinion the greatest book on chess ever, The Game of Chess (Algebraic Edition). The Middlegame chapter in this book is invaluable. Three Hundred Chess Games - 'Dreihundert Schachpartien' - English Language Edition goes together with this, but as a game collection, you shouln't read this untill you've read some more general books. Another very good book for beginners is Chess Fundamentals (Algebraic), by the greatest player ever. This book is interesting because the topics are varied. By this point, the most important thing to study is tactics. 1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations and 1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate (Chess lovers' library) are packed with puzzles to give you plenty of practice and are a great deal for your money. The first book is more important. Logical Chess: Move By Move: Every Move Explained New Algebraic Edition is another good way to pick up the skill of attacking the king. This book is great because there are so many diagrams that you can read this without a board. The second two parts of the book also introduce some strategic ideas. Lasker's Manual of Chess also has a chapter about combinations that is very good. Art of Attack in Chess is a bit more advanced, but is considered the classic on this subject. The Art of Chess Combination (Dover Chess) is another good book that will teach you how to see these combinations. When you have mastered the art of tactics you will have to learn some of the strategies that make them possible. Best Lessons of a Chess Coach will show you how playing positionally will give the opportunity to carry out the attack. This is a great book also with a lot of diagrams. My System: 21st Century Edition is the classic work on hypermodern strategy and probably very suitable at this point. Chess Praxis is the game collection that goes together with this, but again, you might want to wait. How to Reassess Your Chess: The Complete Chess-Mastery Course, Expanded 3rd Edition and The Reassess Your Chess Workbook is a very popular course on chess strategy based on imbalances, Silmans way of calling positional advantages. Two classic works on positional play are Modern Chess Strategy and the set, The Middlegame - Book I : Static Features (Algebraic Edition) (Bk. 1) and The Middlegame, Book 2: Dynamic & Subjective Features (Algebraic Edition) (Bk. 2), which are more thorough. a very easy to read summary of the development of chess strategy is Modern Ideas in Chess and the more thorough Masters of the Chess Board (Hardinge Simpole Chess Classics). There are a countless number of books on this part of the game but these are another few good ones, which will make your chess library more complete. The Art of the Middle Game (Dover Chess) is a very good collection of some very usefull articles. The Middle Game in Chess (Dover Chess) is an interesting treatment of this part of the game. Judgment and Planning in Chess is a classic on how to plan in chess. Pawn Structure Chess explains the strategies behind the different pawn structures that arise out of the various opennings. This is a very good book on understanding the goals of the different opennings. You should not read this though untill you understand The Ideas Behind the Chess Openings: Algebraic Notation . Modern Chess Openings: MCO-14 (McKay Chess Library) is the classic reference book on the openning. At this point you may be wondering how it is possibe to calculate each move when there is so much to keep in mind. Think Like a Grandmaster is the classic work on this all important subject. The Inner Game of Chess: How to Calculate and Win is a more thorough treatment of this subject. In the first book, Kotov writes that the best way to impore your calculation skills is by analysing positions from master games, so here is a list of some good game collections. The best way to do these are to try to guess the next move, giving your own analysis, and then compare it to the author's. My 60 Memorable Games is a favorite but is hard to find. Another favorate is Alexander Alekhine's Best Games: Algebraic Edition, which is really an abridged, but better, version of My Best Games of Chess, 1908 - 1937. Alekhine's games are very worthwhile to study because they are rich in tactics and not above the head of most intermediate players. 107 Great Chess Battles, 1939-1945 (Dover Books on Chess) is the sequel to this. Combinations: The Heart of Chess (Dover Chess) is a very good collection, each game chosen to illustrate a different point. Botvinnik: One Hundred Selected Games has very good commentary. Tal's games are very good to study because they are also very rich is sacrificial tactics. Life & Games of Mikhail Tal and Tal-Botvinnik 1960 are both very good books. Of course Zurich International Chess Tournament, 1953 (Dover Chess) is a must for any serious collector. I should not forget that you should have a book on the endgame because these are very important to study, both to win you more games that come to this point and to tune your calculating ability which will help on the middlegame too. Chess Endings: Essential Knowledge is widely praised. Basic Chess Endings is the classic referance book on this subject
